French Freeview channels last night...!!

Hi all,

I lost the ITV HD channel on Freeview last night (whilst watching the Chelsea/Lazio Champions League match) ...so I did a full re-scan to try and get it back... and I noticed that the number of channels downloaded was higher than I normally scan-in... so I had a quick look through the channels and noticed these...

ARTE HD
Paris Premiere
M6
W9
NT1

There was a full signal for a short time... and the EPG had also been populated for these five channels... but the signal then disappeared... then came back... then disappeared... etc etc etc

I was amazed that I was even receiving these channels...!! I don't live anywhere near the South Coast of England which seems to (from what I have read) receive the French Freeview channels periodically) ...but I live in the NW midlands...!!

Did anyone else this far North receive any French Freeview channels last night...?

There's high pressure over the south-east of Britain at the moment and that's probably responsible (also for the dry weather!). An impressive offering.
 
Well Sudbury Crystal Palace and Blue Bell Hill transmitters apparently had problems last night, but what you show there may explain why, looks like there may have been a brief, but massive boost in reception of French DTT signals overriding the UK signals, or just coincidence that the English multiplex was down and didn't mask the French multiplex unusually available because of atmospherics.

PS. Although your rescan has highlighted and interesting phenomena, sudden loss of signal will not normally be helped by a rescan, unless of course there is a scheduled multiplex move (or your TV is faulty), all it will often achieve, is to remove the affected channels from the channel list, which means they won't be there when the transmission returns to normal.

No DTT here in any language - and probably still none after DSO at the end of the year.
 
There has been strong conditions on VHF and UHF the past few days.

I`ve been getting an out of area digital signal coming over the top of stagecoach on teesside busses frequency in my scanner, the busses have not upgraded to digital that I`ve noticed and they`re the only ones licenced in the area
If you look at the map here, the busses are the highest red marker on the right and the other licenced frequencies are all miles away but it`s coming from on

I had a crack at decoding it yesterday and it is back today at a lower signal than yesterday but I`m going to have another go today, just so I can ID it and work out how far it`s drifted, because on a good day I can only just to say hear the bus control on his 25 watt radio so where ever this digital signal is coming from must have their 25 watts up high or the conditions are really good over their area (in which case I can search for other freqs in that area and see if anything else is coming in lol)
 
Ah so that is why I picked up West Midlands dab looks like I may invest in a motorised VHF/UHF aerial system.
 
I can switch between a 10 ele pointing at Brighton or a 4 ele BB grid aimed south, with that one selected the signals from Le Havre, Chartres, Caen and Cherbourg are pretty much on demand including the HD MUXs which look blooming gorgeous on our Samsung telly. Pity the UK HD is using DVB-T2 (AFAIK) and not available on the Samsung. One of my other interests is marine band and I nearly fell off my chair last night when Liverpool Coastguard came up on Channel 0! Mike along the road from me logged Czech republic on broadcast FM yesterday morning at nearly 1000km.

Band II Czech Republic sounds more like Sporadic E to me although it's very early in the year for that.
 
I have club/dance music in the mix on band2 somewhere near 104.5 lol I`m trying to narrow it down as it doesnt sound like something from round this way lol, wonder if they play an ident at the top of the hour

No ident at the top of the hour but the dance faded out and U2 -Beautiful day has faded in and is playing now lol

I know why it sounded nothing like the normal radio round this way, it`s community radio in Middlesbrough, it doesnt normally make it this far in so I`ve never heard them before lol

Fascinating ...and impressive m8 ...
I can't shake the frustration however ...that there is more chance of getting French terrestrial freeview ...than satellite freesat from Ireland ...

Hi Vipersan,

This was simply a fluke mate... if I had not lost the ITV HD signal I would have not have re-scanned Freeview and would not have found these channels... were the two occurrences linked...? I believe they were... so now... whenever I loose the ITV HD signal... I'll try re-scanning and see if they re-appear... but it'll probably never happen again... it's sods law!!

BTW... our antenna points to the Sutton Coldfield transmitter... and the signals are usually pretty stable... but last night was very strange for whatever reason... unfortunately I did not check which UHF channel they scanned in on... but I would hazard a guess at either channel 30 (Frequency 546000kHz) or channel 44 (Frequency 658000kHz)

I do sympathise with you regarding all your efforts in trying to obtain the Irish Freesat... I have read all of your posts on the subject/in the thread (most of it is over my head alas) and it seems that you just need a certain slice of luck yourself to start the ball rolling... maybe you are trying a bit too hard...?

Definitely tropo, it's that good location of his again, and the 15 element beam I built for him :lol Some piccies Mind you, he does technically hold the world record for Sporadic E distance on B2 from his place to Dominican Republic.
