Got another laser related problem ..

The "Prop" as you call it was the cribbing I was putting under it, cribbing is a stack of large timbers use to temporally support the structure before the real stuff (steel) goes under it.

This is what I'm talking about, oh the orange jack (middle bottom of the container) is a 6 ton and is 35 years old, worked like a champ.

Ah the great pond divide...... around here cribbing means cheating:-biglaugh
A prop comes from the word pit prop but around here a prop is also used in amateur dramatics:-bighappy
 
OK, let's take this even further off topic.

A prop can also be short for a propeller on an aeroplane and a prop(propeller)-shaft takes the drive from the gearbox to the back axle on a rear wheel drive vehicle. A prop is also a position in Rugby Football (both Union and League I believe).
 
Quite simply Prop is used in most of these instances to mean 'a support' ..
This includes.
Pit Prop ..to support the roof
Clothes Prop ..to support washing
Actors Prop ..to support the ability to act out a scene..
..and I suspect even the Rugby usage ..
A player who supports the structure of the rest of the team..

The only one that is really different is Prop Propeller ..Which is after all ..just a shortened word in this instance.

There is no way I would put any of my appendages under that, prop or no prop.

But could still be used as a pit prop if long enough:-lol
 
OK I get it now, so I can call the wall a "Prop" as it will prop me up after a half a bottle of scotch.....Right?

I would have put axle stands at the very least, or a couple of old wheels.

Many years ago my dad & a friend were working on the engine of our old VW Beetle. His friend was under the back of the car when it slipped off the jack and landed on his chest.... Somehow dad managed to lift the Veedub up enough using the rear bumper for the other chap to wriggle out.
 
I just wish to once again express my gratitude ..to Terry for helping me with this logistics problem ..
replacements sourced in the US arrived this morning.
The Talking Book for the blind unit is now fixed and going home tomorrow ..
I just rang its owner and she almost cried over the phone when she heard it working ..
