Just got back from a week's holiday..................

But debate should remain on Forum.

Read back and the issue is over connecting Class 2/Double Insulated appliances to mains earth.

Your last post refers to "earthing the LNB" which isn't what we were talking about.

However, I commend you to read Internet references about the construction and design of Double Insulated appliances and also the standards related to the issue. I think there are some starter links for you somewhere in the Thread.

All the info is freely available and there is nothing to add to what has already been debated.






So, perhaps you need to seek advice from Belkin in order to resolve any conflict.
 
Ah, so is earthing LNB with household earth is a different thing all together?. I read on net, but always fall back on this forum. :)
 
The LNB is connected to the Receiver case (clearly) via the sheath of the cable.

But the Receiver case is not connected to Mains Earth as the Receiver only has a Live/Neutral connection as it is a Class 2/Double Insulated appliance.

You are confusing signal return paths with electrical protective measures.

I cannot help you further and can only suggest you seek other opinions.

These are sometime quite large and make you jump, not goot perched on top of a ladder. Usually as you connect the cable to the dish as 1 hand is holding the dish bracket, the other is on the cable connector, yes sometime its a nice tingle, I would say in te order of 110v but no current.

I always thought it was the in built filter capacitors for power filtering these connect between the live neutral and the chassis.

Not harmful, but dam right annoying.
 
Called up Belkin, with no response.

No, I am not mixing signal ground with the electrical ground.

I checked some other surge protectors also: From branded to made in the PRC ones. And they all have grounded the signal earth to the electrical earth. I know Tivu is getting is getting a bit annoyed by now, but this discussion is just getting better, complex, and tingly!
 
Not annoyed at all - just haven't anything to add. All been said.

One final point, though ................ surely if you use your Belkin, as far as the Receiver is concerned you are still only connecting with the designed, supplied and fitted 2 core mains supply cable.

I should be most surprised if Belkin advise you to interfere with a Class2/Double Insulated Appliance simply in order to allow their product to be used.

Frankly, I'm not at all clear why, as a user you are getting into such detail.

Anyway, I feel sure whatever light you seek will dawn, given time and input from others.
 
Ok, please clarify that if I connect my boxes through the Belkin, then my LNB, and the boxes will be grounded to the household earth?

And which is something you folks do not recommend.

I've just run 2 new cables from my motor and LNB respectively and have brought them into the living room at the old wall plate that has single satellite and terrestrial outlets, both of which are in use. The shielding terminal on this wall plate is connected to a green/yellow wire, which I assume is the house earth system, although it's difficult to be sure because I cannot see what's behind the steel box in the wall.

Having read the above, I'm inclined not to connect the earth to the new wall plate, which has 2 satellite outlets and an outlet each for terrestrial and VHF (the latter is not in use). Is this correct/advisable?
 
To be honest, despite all the issues about destroying the protective aspects of Class 2 equipment, I wouldn't assess the specific issue you mentioned as presenting a degree of undue risk.

But my recommendation would be to omit that connection in the first instance - It seems unnecessary anyway and we are only looking at a signal path here - it should be functional and safe without any interposing any uncertain earthing paths or equipotential bonding.
