Why are manufacturers and retailers of electronic goods jumping on the HD bandwagon with every product they sell?

For example, last night I was being sold a 9MP camera (plain still photocamera) which "takes pictures in high definition". How does it? High definition is a MOVING IMAGE term, not a photo term. And what would be a high definition photo? anything over 5MP?
This morning in the shower, I was being sold a "TOM TOM HD traffic" sat nav. WTF? How in the world is it HD?? And what in the world would be the point??? And why market it as HD when its clearly impossible to view anything HD on such a small screen?

For the record, High Definition and the abbreviation HD refer to a standard of moving picture with a height of 1080 pixels.

They should all be done for false advertising.:mad:

My mobile phone is a HTC Touch HD .

It does doesn't have a Hi-def screen more of an enhanced def screen

It does have 480*800 WVGA _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/480p

Seen a report somewhere recently that a team of scientists did a trial in America.
They showed a group of people a short movie.
They then showed them a 'High-Definition' version of the same movie.

6% said they saw no difference, 94% said it had 'improved image quality'.
The scientists then admitted they had merely altered the contrast of the film and it was not HD.

in my opinion HD is a big con, which is what I thought before I heard about this trial.
 
Personally, I find that looking at those piles of HDTVs in somewhere like Comet or Currys is rather off-putting as these so-called high quality picture TVs are all usually showing some cr*ppy signal which looks even worse when magnified up to and past 42" screens, whereas our 4 or 5 year old Sony widescreen CRT TV is crystal clear on pretty much all channels (some channels are just rubbish cos of their poor encoding), so there's no point upgrading if the resolution on an HDTV spoils the picture of an SD signal!!! :rolleyes:
 
The perception of every individual is also different - the two key factors being viewing distance (in relation to screen size and resolution) and (probably most important!), the effectiveness of our own eyes.

I remember when "Hi-Fi" Audio was the latest big thing (Ahem, in the 1970s, or thereabouts ........) and we all got excited about Total Harmonic Distortion and other terms that bore elements of Marketing as well as some Technical truth: Yet the proof of the pudding was in the hearing and the capabilities of most folk's own ears/audio processing in whatever brain one had were the critical limiting factor.

Now where on earth is that Emoticon with a Male Bovine talking out of it's backside ???
 
The picture is incredible on slow motion That's basically it, slow moving and close up shots. Who wants to sit through a movie stopping and pausing every few minutes to marvel at the quality? (ok, I can think of certain types of movie )

The other annoying thing is the Sky HD ads. They illustrate the effect of HD by seperating the foreground from the background and moving them at different speeds (aka parallax scrolling). Which afaik doesn't happen when watching HD material.

It's all pointless anyway, unless you have a 37" or larger TV. Just 5 years ago everyone was happy with their 26" widescreen FST's
 
Also don't forget that a standard Def signal (90% of all tv in UK) will always look better on a CRT TV than on a HD one.

yet we have virtually all paid loads of cash to watch about 10% of stuff in HD.

I was watching Star Trek Voyager earlier on my Philips VHS combi 15" CRT TV earlier, damn the quality was superb!!! Probably down to my fine adjustments of the contrast and brightness though, but I think that proves a point... :cool:

Yea it is getting bad I had to laugh its what my mate says they are now writing it on the lnb boxes know HD ready LNB but I guess it is for the masses who don´t know any better.
 
Haha, I spotted at market an VHS RECORDER from LG, with big letters on box 2HD!

Which, after checking the manual, become to "2 head system", typical setup for cheap VHS :)
 
Most of the videos on youtube now boasting HD quality, the truth is that is all a big joke.
 
I know somebody with a 'HD ready' stickered Sony 37 inch TV from about three years ago.

I've looked three times at the rear/side/front panels and have yet to find an HDMI port anywhere.

Maybe the sticker is HD ready ?
 
It might have DVI?
exactly the same picture quality as hdmi just not digital audio.

Thats right,last years batch Invacom quad LNB's had a HD sticker on the box(and no better quality) and this year no HD sticker and they seem to perform better now.

LOL, my old Boots VHS cassettes are marketed as HD - in this case 'High Durability'.

Have to admit they still give a good picture though :)
