Hamburg - missing the Uk channels

The channel you are actually receiving will assist you in finding what satellite you are pointing at. Try to watch the programs and see which station it actually is. Alternatively scan the satellite and use the names of the newly scanned channels to determine what satellite you have found by checking the names on lyngsat.com.

The problem you are facing is that the same frequencies are repeated across the arc, thus you may think you are watching a channel from one satellite and you could be on a completely different satellite

Nicolas, there cannot be an obstruction because if there were you wouldn't have been receiving channels from 2A & 2B.
 
As a general rule of thumb that may be correct, but in the case of a satellite cluster where some are stronger than others in your location, the weaker ones may not be receivable because of a partial obstruction of the dish.

First of all, thanks for all the comments, it helped a lot.
I played around last night again with the sat receiver and I looked for eurobird 1 without moving the sat dish. I got eurobird very well, and I can now see BBC1, ITV 1, 2, 3 and 4, as well as E4, E4+1 and more channels from Eurobird.

It seems to me that the pointing is correct. I know that the footprint of eurobird is really bigger than 2D, but could I get Eurobird if the pointing was not correct?

As well, would a amplifier helps for 2D? This would increased the power received at the receiver, but I do not know if this would give me more channels.....or are amplifiers recommended when the length between the LNB and the receiver is quite big?

I really start to think that the problem is the dish size, as the other day as was able to get Channel 5 and I believe that this one is only transmiited from 2D, right? Unfortunately, I lost it when playing with the dish to get a better pointing.....-)

So far: it is possible to get Eurobird 1 in Hamburg with a 85 cm dish size for sure. 2D maybe but either the pointing has to be very good or a bigger dish size maay be required....!

Getting confused here, you say above that you can "now see BBC1, ITV 1, 2, 3 and 4, as well as E4, E4+1", so surely you are already receiving Astra 2D.:)

well, I cannot get BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC HD, Channel 5, Bravo channels have been detected, but the signal does not seem strong enough to watch them.

I am being confused as well, on the sat receiver, when I go in the channel listing, the receiver indicates which satellite the channel is being received from. And for the BBC1 (South west for example) and also ITV channels, it is telling me that they are from Eurobird 1.

Now, even more confusing: I did several channel searches using either ASTRA 2x or Eurobird 1, some channels are now doubled as in some cases, I receive them from ASTRA 2x (most of time, they do not work) and this same channel is received (indication from the sat receiver) from Eurobird 1 and it works.......

I am confused.com! -)

Can someone explain me how a sat meter works, can I give as an input to a sat meter the frequency, baud rate, FEC, SID of a specific channel and orientate the dish according to level detected? Once I get a channel (based on a frequency given), can I definitively stop the research, or do I have to do it again depending on some frequencies?

I use a sat finder, but I have the impression that a sat finder will only indicate if I have a sat or not, and it does not depend on the frequency...but here again I am not sure, as on the other end of the sat finder I have a sat receiver and each time I do my pointing, I set up the sat receiver on the satellite I want to point on and use the sat finder and the sat receiver to orientate the dish.

Last point, without moving the dish, I have a good reception of Eurobird 1 and also ATRA 1x satellite which are at 18 or 19 degrees E, could I be pointing between Eurobird and ASTRA 1, or could I receive ASTRA 1x satellite with a poiting on 28 degrees East.

The channels you are missing apart from BBC HD are on horizontal transponders. Maybe they are weaker where you are. Bravo isn't on 2D I don't think.

BBC3 and BBC4 come up as Cbeebies and CBBC during the day by the way, so check that.

The names of satellites on the receiver can be arbitary. Eurobird1 and Astra2 are effectively co-located on a small dish. It all comes down to what transponder details are entered/there in each satellite's list.

You can't receive Astra1 while pointing to 28E. BUT, since some of the same frequencies are used, a good signal and quality can be reported. But scan it and you wont get the right channels.
