Just been looking on Ebay, and was surprised at thenumber of sellers offering Dreamboxes all programmed up with 12 months viewingto sub packages (or subtly as 12 months free gift!).
Why doesn’t Sky shut these people down? I rememberin the analogue days, Sky hitting people who sold pirate cards hard. I even knowsomeone who shortly after Sky Digital launched sent a remote control to China,had it reverse engineered, then had it produced for him. The price he was goingto offer these units for undercut original replacement remotes by a largemargin. But almost as soon as he tried to start selling them he ended up withalmost 1 inch thickness of letters from Skys swanky expensive lawyers aboutwhat would happen to him!.
I don’t understand how these people getaway with it. I know the cable companies were pretty inept at tackling piracy,but I thought Sky was smarter than them.

a dream box mimics the sky box.
some are doing a card sharing thing where as the dream box has the same box id as the original sky box.
so if there are 5 dream boxes in a house the same card can be moved from room to room because all the boxes have the same id.
sky uk system must match the box id as well as card id to get the system to work.
in card sharing if there is 100 boxes with all the same box id they conect it to the computer and flow the card algorithim to all 100 boxes.
since the card algorithem runs at a slow rate 2 to 6 killobits/s all the dream boxes are clones of the original boxes they all work.
the smart card info is flowed via computer and the box is conected to a satellite dish and bingo free service.
they just shut down in cypres a card sharing service with 1000's of subscribers just recently.
there is a thred here in the forum about this last week.

I have no doubt that Sky will do something, I just hope that they don't go after the satellite forums, or try to get new regulations imposed that will affect our hobby, most of us aren't interested in Sky UK we got into the satellite hobby to be able to view foriegn channels on as many satellites as possible.
I've already reported 1 private server seller, on ebay, as not only was he selling clone dreamboxes but listed all the Sky UK channels you get to view with them, including all the Premium channels, but Ebay don't seem to care as long as they're making money from it.
 
hello, i see no reason why someone can not buy a dream box for home use.
someone has 2 dream boxes and use one card one upstares and one down.
both boxes are set up with the same box number.
they are looking at those that set up one sky card and run 100 to 1000 other boxes .
some even charge a small fee even 5 pounds per month with 1000 others hooked up thats 5,000 pounds per month.
there are some dream boxes that work better than the sky boxes,bigger hard drives,more fetures and they can turn off the enter pin on the movie channels.
someday sky will join the rest of europe and make sky uk available in europe, sky germany available in england and sky italia available all over as well.
if it all belongs to sky murdock they have the broadcast rights for all those countries so if a italian is living in the uk he should be able to use sky italia.
british persons should be able to use sky uk in italy.
one day they will make it open to all.
the broadcast rights is B.S in my opinion.
sky was broadcasting in the clear for many years in the 90's where they in violation of rights????

Ralph, I was talking about the people who are selling the boxes with subscription. Some blatantly listing all the Sky channels that come with it incl Sports and Movies, some just subtly say with 12 months free gift,but we know what they mean.

There is obviously no legal problem using a Sky card in a Dreambox to watch TV in your house, to move one card to another room, or even to network it in your home to watch different channels in different rooms simultaneously (otherwise there would be a legal challenge by all subscription service providers to SmartWi and their competitors).In the three preceding cases there is no theft ofservice, just a more flexible way of using our own subscription.

I think Sky would even have a problem challenging the CAM EMU as I understand they have not conformed to an EU directive to produce a CAM for their UK encryption.

I just think it is strange that a company that has shown zero tolerance in the past to theft of service is leaving these sellers on Ebay.
 
Perhaps they've turned their lawyers to more pressing matters at the moment?

I think you will find that is incorrect as the badly written directive required the production of a CAM which Sky complied with and produced one CAM which was sold to an apparently trusted customer
