I am interested in buying a HD receiver but am not that technical.
The Dreambox 8000 is of interest to me, although it has yet to be released (sometime next May, I understand).

My question is this: Is an HD receiver capable of receiving SD (standard digital channels MPEG 2). In other words is it backward compatible with the existing "normal" digital broadcasts we now receive without the need to have a separate receiver for them?

(Common sense tells me yes, but better be sure).

Yes they are, wouldn't have much to watch otherwise. :)
