Heavy duty polar mount prototype 1

Please don't use WD40 for lubrication. It is a Water Dispersant. It is very good at dispersing water i.e. inside a distributor cap and it is not bad at freeing up seized components. PlusGas is much better as a penetrating oil.
For lubrication and corrosion protection please use either 3 in 1 type oils or even motor oil as they are designed to lubricate, protect against corrosion, maintain film strength under pressure (stay on bearing surfaces), cool, hold combustion by products (carbon etc.) and so much more.

Sorry for lecture but I really hate to see WD40 used as a lubricant. I spent 10 years of my life testing oils and lubricants and they are all designed to do specialist jobs and they are all very good at their intended jobs.
 
Hi to all

The polar mount uses 0.5" X 0.5" rose joints lubricated with graphite grease, and has been used with my 1.2mt Channel Master dish for the past two years without any problem.

The joints are protected from the weather with Aluminium adhesive tape.

The standard CM mount uses bronze bushes even they last some years.
 
@ched999uk It was primarily as a water dispersant (and mud, fine grit etc) that we used the WD40 for. This was back in the mid 70's so I've no doubt received wisdom will point to a different product now. TBH, we saw other teams doing it and thought we'd better copy them LOL.

Interesting choice. I would have thought it would be OK. Must admit I might have been inclined to use a grease but you should be fine with oil.
How's it going with the build?
 
From my reading that is the correct oil for oilite bushes ?, the mount is on hold atm ched, i need to put some sort of a bush in there and looking round for something suitable, please don't mention spherical joints:-doh:-lol.

I will resume pictures when i get something for the job :).
 
I didn't realise you were using bronze bushes, that oil should be OK. I thought you were just using washers and bolts. I have read your comments on ********* joints so I won't mention them :)

I bought that for the bushes in my 1.2 dish ched, i am doing away with washers now, i have had it together with washers and not happy with it, i want it right and just going to take my time until i am happy with it,

Lol pete your correct, ive said my 1.2 mount will be made with them :),

The mount is on hold atm CJ, until i find some type of bearing.
 
Can't you use sealed cartridge type bearings that would just press into the mount ?

I use WD40 for the drive chains on all my motorcycles. The most recent is a large V-twin, now on it's fourth year (roughly 12,000 miles) spending all her days outside and there is plenty of life left in the chain.

I have looked at them wod, and probably could make them work with some washers, i am thinking atm of attaching a ball joint top and bottom / a redesign and making one like the mount below,

That does surprise me. I used to do a fair few miles (16k a year) on my FZ600 and used either chain lube or a scott oiler and the chain still wore out after about 8,000 miles.

If WD40 works for you then continue what you are doing.

That looks like a spherical joint with a built in bolt :) :) :)
