Heavy duty polar mount prototype 1

Just for your consideration: perhaps dish could be even more closer to mount (yellow part could be shortened). And what about center of gravity of antenna? Do not you think that mount connection point "green" will be better than "red"? If you go "green" way, than on on the very end position lower part of antenna will go to opposite side and will work like counterweight.

Add: And, yes, great modeling work again!

Thank you rima yes the yellow point will be made smaller, most things are not to scale atm, that point is still part of prototype 1 with wider wood,

Green point, possible I think offering things up near to the end will determine its location.

What are you making the mount out of steel or something fancy like aluminium ?

Hope your going use a heavy duty actuator to move the dish.

Do egis not make dish motors any more for large antennas ?

The mount will be made from steel wod for strength and its cheaper than aluminium and less cost to have it welded , Yes it will have a heavy duty jack on it lol I thought that goes without saying its a 1.8 dish. not sure about egis and motors tbh but I am sure a 36 inch heavy duty actuator motor will do the job.

Once I did think similar, but after purchasing 36' heavy duty actuator found out that it is simply too BIG (it is really huge!) for my 180cm PFA, I mean it did not fit to original mount. So, I still have that actuator never installed and used, waiting it's time for some future projects. So, Martin, before you go to e-bay for 36-incher (if you did not do it already), try to do some wood-modeling, you are really good at that. I am not saying that 36' is too big for 1,8m, but, perhaps 24' would also be big&heavy enough to withstand any gusts you might have.

Thank you VS, I am just not sure if a 24 will hit my arc, the 18 on the 1.2 is rubbish when nearly fully out and just moves miles with one small click,

The movements are that bad from 45w I cant even lock 61W it just moves past it. I have adjusted the jack to the best place and its still the same. that's why I was thinking a 36?

24" heavy duty jack is massive. I have a brand new one in the garage. Pretty sure it will be more than man enough to drive the 1.8m.

Hi Rimants , I changed the AJAK H180 attached to my 120 fibo for a modified 36 V H2H RM120 usals controlled .
I'm willing to sell the AJAK

I am quite sure I will struggle with a 24 CJ, like I have said I struggle with a 18 inch on the 1.2. and when the 1.8 is up I will have more of the arc to hit with a better chance of picking something up.

With the new positioning of the dish it will have a full view of any ku/c band satellite in our uk orbit and I want to have a look :),

The dish will be 4ft away from my house so a bracket for a 36 would be an easy job to adapt from the wall to the mount, I am also making a design to adjust the level of the 15ft pole the dish will fit on above ground for extra fine tuning, ive started something so I will only do this one once I hope lol.
 
Ok but be aware that a 24inch heavy duty is the same size as my 36inch non-hd. It will be massive.
 
Thank you CJ, there is not much difference in price and if I did fit a 24 and it does not do what I want I have wasted over 100 pound at least the 36 will do the job and can easy be adapted to work if its to big nothing lost.

I am wanting some type of roller bearings for the mounts pivot any idea please.
 
After a lot of thought i am going to buy my own welder, I have not done any welding for a long time and that was gas welding, i am sure i will get back into it:). I am looking forward to doing it all myself tbh,

I just need to read up on one that will be suitable for the steel i will be welding and on top of the job:).
 
I would say get a mig welder. One with cored wire (no gas) is more expensive in wire but doesn't require gas. Standard wire mig requires gas. If you are friendly with a pub you might be able to get hold of a c02 cylinder as they are used for fizzy drinks etc. You can then get a regulator and use that as the gas for standard wire.

There doesn't seem to be much price difference between gas or no gas or both machines so I would get the most flexible one i.e. gas and no gas. I seem to remember that some no gas welders can, with different wire, weld aluminium but I may be wrong there.

If they say 'Turbo' they have a fan built in so you get a longer duty cycle (time on vs time off), but if it's only for occasional use then duty cycle isn't too much of an issue.

As for power, the higher the power the thicker material you can weld but you usually lose the ability to weld very thin material.

Get an arc activated mask (bit expensive £50+), normally see straight through, as soon as arc struck they darken! Brilliant bit of kit especially if you are learning. Also gloves, I decided to teach myself and spent 2 hrs welding, next day I had bad burns on hand!!!! The rays from the arc can easily give you bad sun burn!!!!

Hope that isn't teaching you to suck eggs :)

Looks a nice bit of kit rima:), whats your thoughts of the none gas ones do you know anything about them please ?, i will probably go and join a welding forum and ask for advise on what to buy:).

I have too little experience in welding that I can not allowed to give advices :mad: But after some studying and taking advices from skilful people, I learned that "Gamastar 195L PFC" is universal apparatus with very good characteristics, can weld almost everything (aluminum could be hard to weld ) with gases or without them, electrodes, uncoated or coated wire. At 120A can work without any time limits (no need any brakes), if it is 195A than 25% working time and 75% break. INOX also could be welded with Argon gas.
Small, cheep inventors also can weld, but with lots of limitations. Chameleon masks are available also in big variety of prices, as mentioned by ched999uk, from £50 and almost to no limits. Main parameter of masks is reaction time of glass and also mechanical things are important (easy to operate).
I chose apparatus "made not in China", namely in Czech Republic. They also ship their products all around.

Edit: At the end of the day, anybody needs lots of practice before results look better (never ideal).
