help needed - multi unit distribution system fault

hi all just wondered if someone can help. i live in a block of flats but loosing mostly hd channels.sky have been out but wont touch it just saying that im loosing 3 transponders. i had a look in the riser cupboard and seen that the cables from the dish each go in to a 1 in 2 out splitter before going down to each booster. is this right cos they dont look original to the system would i have to get the management to look at this thanks in advance
 
Its the management companies responsibility to fix it so go and raise hell with them. Under no circumstances try to fix it yourself - you could wreck the system for the entire block, and Sky most certainly wont touch such a system.

It needs looking at by someone who knows these multi dwelling distribution systems
 
ok thanks for that. sky said that the splitters from the lnb should not be individual but one whole unit is this correct
 
No idea - Ive never had a close look at a multi room distro system.

Doesnt matter anyway until an expert comes to fix it!

As Analogue says, it doesn't really matter much, as you can't mess with it yourself, its up to the management to get it sorted.

A point of interest only, a splitter can go first, it would depend on the the layout of the system,the level from the dish and the length of the runs etc, i.e as long as the levels and BER are within spec at the wall points then it is OK. A splitter gives attenuation in the line of approx 3 dB or so, which is roughly equivalent to 10m of cable, so if the dish cable is short enough, the splitter is fine for example. The system designer would (or should) have taken that into account when he put the system together.
 
Splitting a 5 wire feed to run two or more switches can be pretty common. As mentioned, depends on the system design.
 
Before you call management however, do a test with another HD box from a friend. Some BS kyB models are prone to tuner issues which can take out the HD channels first.

Additionally you can try disconnecting one cable first and set the receiver up as a single tuner fed unit, if the HD channels then come in OK, you know its the box at fault and S ky will replace it.

A lack of any dc blocker wouldn't mean certain channels go missing. are you sure that is what they installed to get the system up and running ?
 
There are newer type multi unit systems out there that use the "Band Stacking" technology like Dish Network does,(it's done at the main switch/combiner) it puts all the "H" polarity transponders on one frequency band and the "V" transponders on another higher or lower frequency band, DC switching by the receivers is not needed on these systems and it's presence could cause problems back at the main switcher.

However this should have been accounted for in the installation of this system, the receivers used should have been set to the correct setting for this type of system, a DC blocker should not have been needed, unless someone is useing a different receiver then specified for the system.
 
Do you live in a Bolton @ Home property.

If so the building will have a cascaded Fracarro system installed. Sometimes with these systems you have to install DC blocks if the system has more than one power supply unit. The splitter you refer to will most probably be a tap not a splitter.
