Hi i'm new to the site and new to the satellite tv world. i installed a free to air system for a mate the other day and was simple fitted dish, ran cable and pointed it at Astra 28, scanned for channels and job done!

But i now want to install a system in my own house, i have been offered a system as follows for a decent price.... Dish, 3x LNB's, rail and a Protek 9600ip. I was going to install and point to Astra 19, 28 and hot-bird.

I want as many stations as possible ..mainly the ones you get with your sky box...not the sky sports and movies...but all the others and mainly the Discovery channels ( ie Shed, Turbo and real time). Which the seller assures me i will get when i connect it to the Internet. He also said i will get loads of premier packages including the canal package for free too??

Anyway please excuse my ignorance, but if you could set me strait/ give any advice you may have ! Thanks Daniel:)

The Proteks have a hard wired card share system built into them. Be aware that its not unknown for the servers they connect to for their updates to

1) be hopelessly overloaded so the picture freezes every time there is a key change

2) be busted out of existance.

Most of the old hands think these systems are work of the devil, and are ruining the hobby, so dont expect too much help with it.

oh ..ok well point taken!

So what do you think is the best option to get some free to air and the discovery channels?

Get sky lol?

For the Discovery channels yes to be perfectly honest your best bet is to get a Sky UK subscription :D Then you get a years guaranteed service. You could buy the Protek and find the servers are shut down two days after you install the system. (And if that happens you wont get much sympathy on the board.....) Its happened before and it will happen again.

Free to air channels - any digital receiver will give you those.

ha your probably right i might just do that ..and then maybe mess around with my own dish and diff satellites..just out of interest!

can i ask ..why are people so against the built in share receivers? is it because many people are paying big money..for others to get it free? is so i can understand that!

Pick a reason:

its bound to cause the providers to crack down on the encryptions and tighten them up.

If too many folk defraud their pay tv service they will go out of business. Piracy in the Middle East is out of control atm and the companies are struggling.

its not much of a challenge to connect a box to a router - makes it more like defrauding cable tv

it brings the wrong sort of people into the hobby - dont get me wrong, new faces in the hobby are always welcome, but we get REALLY annoyed with folk who appear on the forum demand instant fixes to their card share problems and then get annoyed when we tell them to go and do some reading for a few hours before it makes sense. We have had more than one person get stroppy because they have spent an afternoon on a home c/s project cant get it working & get annoyed when we tell them its unreasonable to expect to get it working properly with less than 2 months hard work.

Etc etc

i understand ...my main hobby is cars and am in quiet a few diff fours relating to the car and engine types i have ..and come across the same problem!

But thanks for your advice and help..I'm going to get sky in..and in the future get my own dish along side ...

Best of luck - theres always plenty of help here if you get stuck. :)
