My Satellite Setup
1 metre dish
not too sure the lnb
My Location
Benidorm Spain
Looking for some advice on Satlink 6906.
Recently purchased and not too sure how to use.
Can anyone help?

Hi Paul thanks for reply.I have the manual but still not too sure how to use the meter.
Do I do the following
1.Connect cable from lnb to the meter
2. turn on meter
3 press menu
4.Choose Satellite Heading
5.Satellite Search
6.Select Astra 2E( this is the one I want)
7Press OK
8.Then move the dish.
I have been using Satellite dishes for several years now but have found that we are right on the edge of the footprint for Astra 2E and is quite difficult to catch the signal.
What should I be looking/listening for.How do I know that I have the best signal that I can possibly get?

Billy did you get a model with the European satellite database pre-installed? If so then 28E should be in there, pick the strongest transponder as per Williams list and use this to fine tune the dishes reception, I'm presuming though you have a semi working dish on 28E already????

You can download and install the .bin file that I developed in Jan this year as it has a reasonable European data base with William1's Strongest Transponders at that time - the file is here on Dropbox
NB: this is for the latest version of the 6906 - not the early one.

NB2: you will also need some extra leads to connect the meter to the PC from which you load the .bin file - as follows:

I bought a UGreen USB (at the PC end) to RS232 DB9 male (connects to the USB-to-RS232 female lead supplied with the WS-6906) conversion lead from Amazon - see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Converter-A...8&qid=1454001260&sr=1-5&keywords=usb+to+RS232.

It works well, but you do have load the USB driver from the small CD supplied with the lead - don't use the generic driver which Windows will load or , when the "Upgrade.exe" file from the small CD supplied with the meter is fired up, it will not recognise that there is a COM Port 7 for the conversion lead - so put the conversion lead CD in the CD/DVD drive BEFORE you connect the lead to the PC USB port, and then everything should go OK when you then connect that lead to the one supplied with the meter.

After that I was able to load the "Upgrade.exe" file which is on the small CD supplied with the meter and then load the new file to it

Good instructions there, looks like theres many ways people could brick their device.
 
Hi everyone thanks for response.
1. I have just purchased the meter so I assume it is the latest model.
2.I have left the leads for connecting to my laptop back in the UK. Didn't think I would need/use them as they are not compatible with my laptop.I don't have a com port on laptop.This being the case I don't see me being able to update the meter.
3.The meter has Astra 28E already on it
4.Transponder:Will there be some on my meter if so How will I know which one to choose.
5,Yes I have got my tv up and running as the dish was already up,but I don't think it is as good as it could be.I think it will only take fine tuning.

You don't need a physical RS232 Serial Comm port on the laptop as the OS will allocate a virtual port and number to an actual USB port - so try to get someone to post to you the lead that came with the meter, and then (you still need the additional "green" lead I mentioned earlier!) you use that to reprogramme the meter with the .bin file from the Dropbox download that I posted earlier today to get a reasonably upto-date sat transponder list from which you can work with to go forward.
PS: the laptop I used doesn't have a Serial Port either - just 4x USB ports!

Look here > FlySat Astra 2E/2F/2G @ 28.2° East, start with one of the EU beams (for example 11914 H) and get absolute max signal, then move on to some UK beam (example 10906 V). Assuming the meter got some 28e frequencies 'in memory', or else it should be no big job to enter a few from the flysat list.

afaik, the 6906 will only do SD (DVB-S), so the BBC HD's etc (DVB-S2) can't be tuned to with that meter, but they will (in my experience) be ok if the dish is properly set up for the SD's. Then finetune here and there to get the best compromise between the 3 sats 2E, 2F, 2G (or the best results for the channels you're after).

Regards getting BBC1 and other HD channels:I have had them previously so I know that the dish,lnb and sat box are all working ok.
I go back to the uk several times a year and have to put the dish and equipment away so when I return I have to try and get a signal from scratch. I may not always be setting up in the exact same spot.May be on another pitch on campsite.Can someone tell me the steps to take when connecting the meter to the dish.I will be trying this on a friends dish as he has no signal whatsoever.
Regarding leads and new bin files I will wait till I return to Uk and attempt the updating of the meter.

^^^ a small compass + a vague idea about elevation + a £3 needle\beeper box should give results in a few minutes (provided the dish is mounted stable). Later, satlink for finetuning of a few chosen frequencies.
