hi folks, I'm new to this hobby and am struggling to allign my dish I have recently purchased a 80cm dish and a inverto duel lnb, I can get all the 19.2 channels fine but nothing off hotbird, the question is, I am wondering if I have a faulty lnb as if i cover the half up that is receiving 19.2 then swap the lnb over into the holder the other side I do not receive a thing, would this be the best way to test or am i barking up the wrong tree. any advise would be welcome cheers

So, that's not a dual LNB, but a Monoblock.

Usual setup error is failing to take into account that due to reflection of the dish, everything is the opposite of what you at first imagine.

So, if the dish is aligned to 19E (which I assume it is), and you look from the LNB towards the dish, then the left hand head of the Monoblock should be in the collar and the right hand head should be roughly level with it, possible rotated anticlockwise a little to get the skew right.

Your Receiver should have it's DiSEqC settings such that Hotbird = Port A and Astra 1 = Port B.

If in any doubt, post some pics to our server: The problem is often then obvious.

yes your correct it's a monoblock, I must have ladder fatigue been up and down all afternoon I was even looking at the box it came out of.........
but are both sides of this block the same though, meaning if it is receiving a signal through the side of the block clamped in the cradle if the other side of the block was then clamped should this then recieve a signal ie. the clamped side is the side the signal is going to, level with the centre of the dish??

Yes, they are both identical, bar the fact that in the absence of DiSEqC commands, the right-hand (looking from LNB towards dish) head is the default.

In order to select the left hand head, a DiSEqC command is required: If that is the one clamped and you have not set Ports, it won't be active >>>>> Zilch

But the correct head must be in the clamp, regardless.

ie If the dish is focussed on 19E, the left head is clamped and if focussed at 13E , the right head should be clamped.

It's very straightforward and logical.

And although you start with the two heads horizontal, you still need to fine tune the offset head for skew by rotating the Monoblock one way or the other a few degrees (direction as per earlier Post).

So, as stated earlier, pictures are good, as they save all the batting backwards and forwards of explanations.

In the meantime, please state:

a. Which of the two Satellites you have chosen as the focal Satellite
b. Which head (left or right) you have in the collar (as viewed looking from LNB towards dish)
c. If you have set DiSEqC Ports in your Receiver ie A = Hotbird and B = Astra

If you have no DiSEqC settings set up on the receiver, then the LNB which gives no signal when covered is port 1 or A, if it is the Easterly most LNB (left hand if looking at the LNB from behind the dish), then this should point at the more Westerly satellite, vice versa for the easterly satellite.

So as mentioned above by Tivu, because everything is reflected, the most westerly LNB, points at the most Easterly satellite.

Decide which LNB you want as the main focus, not really important which one, then align on that satellite, then setup in the receiver for LNB 2, set it for DiSEqC 2 or B and it should with a small amount of skewing of the LNBs, bring in the second satellite.

@caley

Please note especially Rolf's info is looking at things from dish towards LNB and mine is looking at things from LNB towards dish.

................... just to ensure there is no confusion! (We both said the same thing in the end).

................... another reason why pics are really useful.

thanks, I will try again when it's light I think I may have the monoblock in the wrong way although it has been in and out that many times today!!!!! I also thought that just by switching between hotbird and astra on the foxsat program menu would be all that was needed.

answers to questions:

i was hoping to have hotbird as the focal satt. thus the clamped side of the monoblock ( inline with the arm ) looking from the lnb to dish the left hand side of the block is currently clamped and I have a signal from 19.2 I think coming from the offset side . ( DiSEqC Ports on the receiver I had not looked at this)

The Foxsat is fully DiSEqC capable, but not exactly user friendly.

So, I suggest you read this _http://www.astra2d.com/diseqc.html

But you must allocate Ports as described (And the Foxsat does use A, B etc as opposed to 1, 2 etc.) as this is the only way the Receiver can switch on the relevant head on the Monoblock (They are not both active at the same time).

And (of course) you have the wrong head in the clamp. Your offset head is actually looking 6 deg the other side of 13E ie at 7E!

Give it a rest overnight, then before you start twiddling I strongly suggest you carefully re-read our instructions.

Five minute job after that (once you've set the Foxsat correctly)

A word of warning, though: The pre-stored Tranpsonder lists in the Foxsat are way out of date so I suggest you keep an eye on the up to date lsitings on Flysat or Lyngsat and ensure you set up using a valid Transponder. Once happy, then select "Network" and do a scan and it should find most of the remasining current Transponders (but not all, as this is not a Blind Scan- so if you have any desired Channels still missing, you will need to create. "User Transponders"

many thanks, I can't beleive how difficult I am making a simple job, just one quick thing the block is currently receiving 19.2 (miracle) that would mean that the other side of the block is pointing at either 13e or 25e ??? and not 7e or does it ???. I am now going to read everything I can before my next attempt. cheers

Well as far as I can see, if you are actually now aligned to 19E and receiving on the right hand head (looking from LNB to dish), the left head must be at 25E.

I think you've got the idea now, so have another go in the cold light of day ................ and if it still doesn't fall into place, Post some pics (It's just so much easier to understand than lots of words!)

HOWEVER .......... how do you know for sure you are getting 19E? Selecting 19E in the Receiver isn't good enough as frequencies are re-used across the arc. ie If you align the dish to 13E and scan "19E" you'll still only get 13E Channels. The "Satellites" are just data tables, and are not much use until and unless they correspond with where you are aligned to.

So you need to check real Channels received against Flysat or Lyngsat to prove which Satellite you are getting.

I know I have got 19e because I watched the end of the liverpool game on sport 1,( I got all of the 19e channels after some of your expert help about a month ago) then I got all exited and got a bigger dish
