Here's a tutorial to setup the smargo. Please respond if the smargo reads a card that failed in the internal reader.

Here's how to get it working.

Requirements ...

  • DM7025 / DM800 / DM8000 / DM7020
  • Smargo Smartreader+ - Buy one here

  • Latest Gemini GP2 Image or Nabilo Image.
  1. Unpack the tools zip file to somewhere useful.
  2. Plug the smargo into a USB port on your PC.
  3. Windows will detect the new device.
  4. Do a manual drivers install , pointing to the Drivers_Windows folder.
  5. It will prompt for drivers for the USB device , then again for the serial device. OK, once the drivers are installed we're ready to go.
Ok, lets go.

Make sure the smargo is plugged into the PC with NO viewing card in it.

Firstly, we need to check the smargo firmware version, so run the SmartreaderUpdate.exe

If the firmware is v1.3 it will say so in the status bar at the bottom of the window and you can close this util, if not, click the update button and it will apply the update.

Now we need to put the smargo in the correct mode to run directly in the Dreambox. So run the Smartreader.exe and change the kernel settings to Dreambox and click Apply.

Ok, so now your done with the Smargo setup tools.

Move to the dreambox now.

GEMINI 2 IMAGE ...
Go to the blue panel, and select Extras / Settings , then select Kernel Modules.
Enabled the 'USB Cardreader FTDI' option. I think a reboot is required after enabling this.

Ok , lastly lets edit the CCcam.cfg to suit our new reader.
Simply add the following line

Thats it guys.


NABILO IMAGE ...

Install the appropriate driver from this zip file. It contains Nabilo packaged drivers for the DM7025 / 800 / 8000. Ftp the correct file to /tmp and then go to the Green Panel, then addons. Select manual install of nab.tgz files. You should now see the file you FTP'd in the list. Simply select it and confirm to install.

Edit the file /etc/init.d/bootup

you add:

echo 90 > /proc/progress
modprobe ftdi_sio

Restart enigma 2

Again, edit the CCcam.cfg to suit our new reader.

Code: 
SERIAL READER : /dev/usb/tts/0 smartreader+
Reboot the box to use the new drivers.
Thats it guys.

Enigma 1 DM7020

The smargo software package I've included does include a driver for the DM7020. This can be applied via telnet quite easily. Again, FTP the 2 drivers to /tmp and make sure you Chmod them to 755. Failure to do this will halt the install of these drivers. Then in a telnet session enter the following.

Obviously , same applies , add the CCcam.cfg line

A little more info on how to get the smargo to work with Nabilo.

Edit the file bootup in the folder /ect/init.d

you add:

echo 90 > /proc/progress
modprobe ftdi_sio

Restart enigma 2

Then if you wish to change the clock frequency you need to add this line:-
SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/ttsUSB0 XXX0000

SMARTCARD CLOCK FREQUENCY: /dev/ttsUSB0 6800000 [ Tested and working on UK NDS2 CARDS ONLY ]

You must not change the clock frequency if you do not know what you are doing!!!!!!!!


 
thanks mate I've added the mod I missed. I didn't mention at this point about overclocking because of its obvious dangers.
 
Just a question: Why would you use this instead of the built in card readers of the dreambox?
 
The NDS3 card in the internal reader gets nuked mate. Internal reader is 5v, smargo is 3.3 or 5v auto detected.
 
Lads has anyone else had trouble with the smartreader program with Vista? It detects the smartreader ok on my lappy but when I hit apply after setting to Dreambox mode it did not save the change. At first I didnt realise that this was not happening and thought I had omitted something else during setup. So after 2 weeks p#~+ing about with drivers, settings editing lines I gave up. Then I had another go on an XP machine and noticed I got a confirmation when switching to Dreambox mode. Plugged it into the 800 and away she went. Overclocked it bit by bit and now running at 6.86 and the chip is a lot cooler than when in the internal of the dreambox or the sky box.
 
Hi everyone...

I made my dm to see my smargo but sometimes it reads the card and gives a message like: server:smartreader+ ecm time: xxxxx but no picture and after a while the card disappears. Any ideas??
 
Exactly what it says. It detects that an NDS3 card runs at 3.3v. The Dreambox internal reader cannot do this.

So with a DM7000S you would use DM7020 drivers? I have a DM7000 and are about to hook up one of these.

Hello mate,

I´m new on the Forum, found it googeling about the same Problem, DM800+Smargo+TotalTV (new NDS Card, works on 3.3V)

I spend the last few days searching for Help and I found your Thread...
I have a TotalTV NDS Card, with the same Problem, the Card works only with 3.3V and I´ve nearly destroy the Card after 5sec in the internal reader of DM500plus.

Now i have order a DM800 and a Smargo reader to try this out.
Are you 100% positive that the Smargo reader has a "3.3 or 5v auto detected" mode ???

I never heard about this before, you are the only one who posted that info about Smargo.

I must admit when I read it I wasn't sure about it myself. As you say its not mentioned in the official spec of the smargo. It was written when the sly italia NDS3 cards first came out and the internal readers where nuking the cards. The smargo of course ran them without issue, not even a little warm. I'd like a proper explanation of the difference myself.

i have been trying to get the smargo to work on this setup:
DM8000
pureflash _2may in flash
barry_allen 4.8.2 on a 4GB CF (133mhz)
blackhole v010

strange:- BA placed the MB_images folder in the HDD instead of placing it on the CF

when i place the blackhole in flash the smargo works without problem

is it possible that i need to remove the harddisk when i'm flashing the box?

hmm interesting. Although not really suitable for this thread mate. Sounds like a barry allen issue to me. I installed to SD card on the DM8000 with the hard disk installed. It would certainly get round the problem if you did as you suggest.

For some reason nabilo stuck with 4.8.2 on the may 2nd pureflash, although 4.9.x is out now. Maybe try updating your BA and starting again.

This is what i'm looking for, but i can't find the drivers for the DM7020, please give me a hand.

Hi Guys

What is the latest firmware version for the smargo reader?
and if there is later than 1.3 where can I download it from?

pretty interesting readings well done lads ... is this only for 700 s models ..what about 500 and 600 s .. im sure ive read their about 2 emus working with yous know what ...i really need to brush up a bit ...
