Installing new hardware

I have been trying to install a small item, I am using Windows 98 second edition, just after I attempt to install the item, it gives me the message Update Device Driver Wizard, and the following message. Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device. I saw that you could obtain patch to get over this. went to Microsoft and downloaded following File 240075UP.EXE version 4.10.2223 says it fixes problems with some usb devicesnot running, but it has made no difference. Can someone tell me in simple language so that an idiot like me can understand, have I downloaded the wrong thing, if so what should I have got, also how can I get over this problem. I am not a computer literate person so you will have to excuse my ignorance. But if someone can help me solve the problem I would be extreemly grateful, thank you.
 
Erm, what is the 'small item' you are trying to install?
 
Some USB devices require a software installation prior to insertion, did you get a disk with it?

Thank for replying, the item is Cas 2 Interface, I felt it was a pc problem rather than the hardware, and possibly my own inabilityand in reading different postings and articles on microsoft it maybe some kind of conflict on my pc. I know I could have posted on the right place in the forums,but felt it was more pc related, and that is why I did not mention what the product was, hope it has not broken any rules, thanks

Thank you for replying, no there was no disk with it, software downloaded [please see my reply to post from Polomint]
 
Its not a laptop rather than a PC is it ?

Some laptops do not correctly power the USB port and require a powered USB hub to operate external things

Hi, no it is just an ordinary desktop pc.
