Eutelsat Statement on Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB)

Paris, 15 October 2012 – Arqiva and Eutelsat have jointly agreed to terminate broadcasts via Eutelsat’s HOT BIRD satellites of channels belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). This decision was based on reinforced EU Council sanctions and a confirmation by France's broadcasting authority that the Sahar 1 TV channel that broadcast in IRIB’s multiplex of television and radio services should be permanently switched off.

IRIB has been informed of the termination of its contract. Transmissions consequently ceased this morning through the HOT BIRD transponder.

Notes to editors:
France’s broadcasting authority (the Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel) confirmed its decision of 2005 that the Sahar 1 channel should be permanently switched off via Eutelsat’s Hot Bird satellites. As a French company, Eutelsat is bound to comply with instructions from the French broadcasting authority.
Moreover, Ezzattolah Zarghami, as the head of IRIB, was included in the list of European Union sanctioned persons disclosed on March 23, 2012, following a violation of human rights by IRIB in its programming.

do they broadcast anywhere else that can be received in europe and will this mean that mr galloway will have to return to england and buy a map to find out where his seat is ????

European Parliament resolution of 17 November 2011 on Iran – recent cases of human rights violations: 13. European Parliament resolution of 17 November 2011 on Iran – recent cases of human rights violations:

Hardly 'recent' and I'm unsure how a transmission could be blocked from way outside the uplink area.

Iran isnt happy at the shutdown :D

Press TV has launched a Facebook petition to save the news channel across Europe after European satellite provider Eutelsat SA stopped the broadcast of several Iranian satellite channels on the order of the European Commission.

In a blatant violation of freedom of speech, the company ordered media services company, Arqiva, to take the Iranian satellite channels off one of its Hot Bird frequencies on Monday.

The decision follows months of jamming of Iranian channels by European satellite companies.

Iranian news channels affected by the decision say they only aimed to break the West’s monopoly on news broadcast by reflecting the voice of the oppressed people to the world.

The illegal move by Eutelsat SA, therefore, is a step to silence all alternative news outlets representing the voice of the voiceless.

Press TV calls on its supporters to join the campaign and back the news channel by liking the petition and leaving comments at the following address in order to protect the free speech in Europe.

edit - link removed as it wont unparse!

So its not a blatant violation of freedom of speech when the Iranian teams jam France 24 et al on 13E

I was watching the BER go up and down every few minutes last night on F24.

Intelsat has its HQ in Luxembourg, and have been ordered to shut down the new operation on 68E

I know it's old news but found this article on the EBU website.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has described recent interruptions to news delivered by satellite into parts of the Middle East as “an attack on media independence.”

The targeted jamming cut off radio and television content by broadcasters including the BBC, France 24, Deutsche Welle and the Voice of America. European satellite operator Eutelsat reports that the "deliberate and intermittent interference," originated from Syria and Iran.

EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre said: “Access to information is a universal human right and an essential component for democracy. We deplore this attack on media freedom.”

The most recent episode may link to a Eutelsat decision to stop carrying 19 Iranian channels operated by Iran's state media organization, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). Eutelsat said
it had taken Iranian state television and radio channels off air to comply with tougher EU sanctions on the Islamic state.

In recent years, Iran has jammed the reception of a variety of broadcasters, according to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

The practice of deliberate interference with broadcast signals is banned under ITU rules. In February 2012, the ITU called upon the world’s nations to take "necessary actions" to stop intentional interference with satellite transmissions.

The change in ITU regulations, which was approved at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-12) in Geneva, Switzerland, came after numerous complaints that international satellite TV programs in Persian and Arabic were suffering from deliberate interference.

11173 is barely keeping a steady lock for me on both dishes that get 24.5W, must be the rain. Can hear bins rattling outside.

Okay little more interesting.

These three muxes are mirrored on 97W for the America's I knew there was a reason for 480i.
