Is dtt on the way out??

DTT days have been on a slide for a while now as Digital Broadband has a bigger cheque book than DTT,
I think by 2025 there will be just 2 multiplexes for the UK after that who knows.
 
More 5G means even more demand for electricity. You might say that you can view using 5G but that needs more power for both streaming and "reception". In the same way that there's a hidden power cost when we moved from analogue terrestrial to digital there's a further cost if we were to go to 5G.
 
If they want to go down the "iptv replaces dtt" route they are going to have to sort the uk broadband out. Too many areas still have ropey connectivity. Ive stuck with our ~3 meg adsl connection as the maximum im guaranteed if we switch to fttc is 8 meg. This is thanks to the completely illogical place Openwretch fitted the new cabinet which is a good half mile from the village (over a mile by the time it gets to our front door!_

(Before anyone asks no there aint any wifi providers round here....)
 
With the channels on offer changing almost as often as a political manifesto, I'm surprised they haven't already sold off the bandwidth that has the highest channel churn, must be where the least money comes in, and after all, money talks more to greedy people than services... :)
 
In reality I think we will probably end up with a 5G broadcast system being the direct replacement for DVB-T/DVB-T2/DAB+ in the future. It's already been/being trialled by the BR in Bavaria and the BBC in the Shetland Islands for BBC radio. That would fit in with the spectrum becoming 5G spectrum rather than specifically terrestrial broadcast spectrum.

From what I understand it basically works like a hybrid broadast-IP multicast kind of system where the equivalent of a web stream is provided on a specific bit of spectrum to all users like current digital TV/radio broadcasts. I believe the BBC version used a special version of the iPlayer to play the streams.

Presumably if the signals are strong like current mobile phone networks in a typical environment, it'll go the way of having TVs with built-in 5G tuners that don't need an external aerial. Whether the part of the network that provides the live TV/radio signals is free or provided through a paid mobile phone network is something I guess we'll have to wait and see! By that point maybe the only live stuff will be news and sport on television.

5G certainly seems to have promise in many respects - I'm at a bit of a loss why the main UK Election protagonists seem to think FTTH is the answer to all our connectivity issues as it's fast becoming redundant. I worked for BT in the mid 80s and we were talking about universal fibre then! Still hasn't happened. But is it really needed now?

With wireless connectivity, there's always the possibility of interference, be it unintentional electrical noise, or someone being a pain in the bum and disrupting things to be a nuisance, whereas fibre is directly from the exchange to the modem, and being optical is not as susceptible to noise interference (maybe now and then getting a bit of a blip from a random neutrino passing through), so FTTH would be the more reliable connection for home-use... :)

And of course, fibreoptics make the tinfoil hat people happier, because there's no "cancer causing radiation" from it like they claim for all new radio technologies... :)
 
Looks like the future of DTH TV in the UK will be via satellite :)

TV manufacturers are very slow to catch up what is happening in the real world,
There are not many TV's with Satellite tuners available today the majority have only FreeView tuners that may well be obsolete within the next 5 years.

I think you will find in time that you may well get a fibre node on your nearest distribution point, ie the pole outside, then a fibre dropwire to your property. Certainly happening around where I live in the sticks..

They're shortly going to do that in our village.

Five years after we all abandoned BT Openreach for Fixed Wireless Access, which has been fast and reliable.

As an interim solution perhaps, but in the long term the cost of building launching, running and maintaining satellite transmission systems would in comparison be prohibitive once a fibre infrastructure is in place
 
It does look as though eventually the whole of the UHF band(ch21 to 69) will be sold off to mobile phone/broadband companies at some point in the near future. Only a couple of weeks ago I had to retune my dad's TV to pick up Freeview channels. Here in Pontop Pike land the muxes are all in the 30s of the UHF band now. My neighbour told me about this and I said I could have retuned your telly if I had known about it. I told her you are going to have to at some point in the future replace your TV aerial with a satellite dish to continue receiving TV. Or switch to cable(we just recently had Virgin Media installed in our area).
 
Just had to re-tune in the wake of Bilsdale mux changes, too.
 
In the future all TV will probably be via Fibre but feeds from Sports stadiums & Concerts will continue to use satellite for the foreseeable future but eventually it will all be Fibre & we will all either be driving Electric Cars or passengers on driver-less transport :)
 
Such a shame, it will go eventually but still quite fond of terrestrial.

Yep, had to retune here too, the uncle thought his TV had broken because he was just getting a black screen, being the "must complain about everything and blame it on the government becaue he doesn't like them" type he is, he certainly gave me a lot of earache while waiting for it to retune....... :-wow
 
5G will provide television reception with a ground based antenna, how many of those will there be (before the radiation turns people to dust ?)
