Is there a receiver that has the same full functionality as a sky+ box?

Hi All,
first post. A family friend showed me his new internet/sky setup with a new receiver - not a dream box.

I'm quite happy with Sky and the level of subscription I have but I have to say it's a nice idea if I can receive all the channels inc. HD ones!

Before I begin understanding how this all works I'm keen to understand whether there is a receiver that gives ALL the funcionality of a Sky+ box.

i.e. can I record with '1 click,' can I record and watch a 2nd channel? EPG any good? etc....I did take a look at some images of the Dream 8000 and can only see 1 arial socket, which might indicate you can't watch and record 2 different channels.

Also thought this could be a winner for multi-room viewing as most LMB's have 4 arial sockets...any advice on this?

However the only advise you will get from us regarding Sky UK is this - if you want all the Sky channels then buy the appropriate level of subscription.

There are receivers that can be made to approximate the functionality of Sky+, but they are not entry level receivers and can take many many hours pf tinkering to get set up properly.

We will give you any advice we can, but you dont take one of these linux boxes out of its packaging and have full epg functionality for example - you have to tweak the receiver..
 
Hi, and thanks for such a fast response - I hope the receiver/s respond as quickly :-)

I understand that this setup is not a plug & play setup but before I start spending many man hours learning and making the right purchases, for me it's very important I understand whether I can replicate the same functionality as a sky+ box as for me it is this user friendly setup provided by Sky that make for viewing pleasure. I don't have the ambition to save money on these types of things these days if I have to sacriface functionality.

With regards to setup, I'm no stranger to linux and unix, albeit several years since I've touched it.

Again, advice on the original points very much appreciated.
 
Have a look at the Vu+ line of receivers. They arent too expensive, and with the right set of plugins would probably do much of what you want.

However we cant stress too much - if you want an easy life then live with the Sky+ box! :D
