Itv2+1 but not itv2

Hi everyone,

I just bought and installed in the south of France a Humax Foxsat HDR.

I am a bit annoyed because I can receive ITV2+1 but for some reason not ITV2 (no or bad signal is displayed when trying to watch ITV2).

Strangely the signal is strong and of good quality for ITV2+1.

any idea why ?

I am also missing some channel of less importance to me and some are "pixelized".

The two channels mentioned are on different transponders on Astra 2D. ITV2 is on a vertically polarised transponder and ITV2+1 on a horizontal one. This is probably the reason why. Here in Gran Canaria we can receive horizontal TPs on 2D but not the vertical ones. You need to check out the various reception reports for your area on the web to work out what tweaks you need to make to your system to change this if possible. You might find a site such as -http://www.flysat.com/28east.php useful to help you work out which TPs you are receiving.
 
What size dish are you using?

Is that due to the fact that the sat signal is focused on the UK and I am missing this part of the signal in my region?
I think there is a tweak on my LNB related to that "polarization" you are talking about. I can turn either clockwise of anti clockwise the LNB. Do you this that could change something for me?

on the website for Astra 2D they are giving information about V.PID and SID code. what are they and how could they help me tweak my receiver/dish?

My dish is a 60cm one.

Assuming your dish is of suitable size, the problem is likely to be incorrect LNB skew.

Looking from the LNB towards the dish, the LNB needs to be rotated slightly clockwise. This means that you should then get optimum reception of both Horizontally and Vertically polarised Channels.

That said, 60cm might be too small for the Nice area - you'd need local advice to be sure.
 
Greedo. There is a useful map halfway down this page (-http://www.astra2d.com/maps.html) which suggests you need a 1.5m dish. I am quite surprised you are getting any 2D with 60cm !
 
If the LNB skew doesn't improve things, I'd definitely think about going up to an 80cm dish. It would give you a rain fade margin too. I use a 60cm here for Freesat but the signal can fade during heavy rain.
 
60cm is definitely too small, we have a couple of members from down that way and I believe that at least an 80cm is required for all Astra 2D channels, I'm sure they'll comment when the log on.

I am not sure about my dish size.
are we talking radius or diameter ?
Mine was sold as a 60 cm one but is it quite big and must refer to the radius of the dish.

Anyway I can get most of the channel I want with a clear signal (strength about 80 to 100% and quality is less around 50 to 70%, I even get BBC in HD) so my question is more why I can't get ITV2 while I get ITV2+1.

you seem to say that I need the adjust the skew to be able the get the vertical and horizontal signal so I am going to try and see if the signal is affected and if I cen get more channels.

what should I do just turn it and see if I get better signal , as simple as that ?

Horizontal and vertical reception will vary in larger amounts the further you are away from the centre of the footprint, hence the problem you are having. The skew angle needs to be adjusted a couple of degrees at a time, checking the signal quality at every step. If the LNB can slide in closer or further away from the dish, see if this affects strength and quality also.

However, if you are showing no signal at all on the missing channels, you are probably misaligned, or you require a bigger dish for good solid constant reception.

Never heard of dish size being specified by radius - it's usually a diametric measurement from top to bottom.

Any chance of a piccie?

On standard, traditional, offset dishes the vertical is longer than the horizontal but the horizontal diameter that is the effective size. Here in the UK we have the $ly minidish which is wider than it is tall but that's a special case.

I'm surprised you're getting any signal from any of the 2D channels at all with a 60cm dish. Your setup must actually be very well aligned and having a Humax as a receiver certainly helps as it had an extremely sensitive tuner.

Further north in the Vaucluse I find an 80cm dish is pretty much required for reception in all but heavy rain. Down on the Côte d'Azure I would suggest 90cm dish or, if you can stretch to it, a 95cm or 100cm dish would give a lot of leaway for rain fade.

I finally got time to do some tweaking on my dish and ... it worked ! so thanks everyone for the participation i get a better signal in strength and quality.

For information I am using an offset dish (60cm high for 70 cm wide, I bought it in the UK ) in Nice with a Foxsat Humax HDR and i get a good signal.

I am using the wrong way ? should it be taller than it is wide or wider than it is tall ?
 
Hmm.

BSkyB dishes are wider than they are tall and have LNBs with appropriately shaped Feedhorns ..... but "proper" offset dishes are generally slightly taller than they are wide.

But, either way, I cannot see how you could mount it 90 deg off the intended method as the LNB arm would be in the wrong place!

It could be a Raven Gemini G70 _http://www.raven.co.uk/satellite-products/documents/GeminiTechnicalSpecification_000.pdf these are oval-on-their-side dishes but which use standard LNBs. They are wider than they are tall because they are designed with multiple LNB use in mind but can be used with a single LNB of course.

How much rain does it ake to affect your reception?
 
The Raven Gemini 70 is a cracking dish, performs as well as most cheaper 80cm dishes.
