Following posts with Sophia and Gungrave, I would like to suggest learning Portugese.
The Portugese section has a lot of interesting daily activities and I am sure that if we can learn some Portugese lessons, it would be possible to make use of these posts without the need to translate them entirely.
Also, it would be great to have interactivity with our Portugese members.
Your next trip to Portugal would be more enjoyable if you already know few hundred words and some daily used sentences.

Sophia and Gungrave:
Please let me know what do you think and if you can think of any member who is willing to prepare some lessons for us on a weekly basis.
Also, any member who thinks that this would be useful, is welcome to add his vote.

Hope that the admins of both sections can give this their blessings.

I add my vote.

I can read spanish, but Portuguese although similar, difficult for me to understand.

Excellent idea Dish I think, if anyone is willing to give it a go.

Brilliant idea.
I too find Portuguese difficult to read and some tuition from a native Portuguese speaker would be much appreciated.

Yes, excellent idea but will the local barman understand when I ask him in fluent Portuguese for two 0.2 LNBfs and a softcam. :D

Let's see first if we have a teacher.
He/she would then direct us to a bar where the barman works during the day for TVTel.

The second sentence is fine, although it would be better said :

- Gostaria de / Adorava aprender algum português : Meaning I would like to / love to learn some portuguese;

The first sentence is a bit confusing: Are you saying
- That is a sophia of shame (isso é um sophia de vergonha) or

- "That is a shame, sophia" or what a pity, sophia : Mas que pena sophia

The 1st option is not what an English speaker would say.

I have been a visitor to the Algarve for the past 20 years, but still "falo portuguese muito poco" if I try to converse there I am usually answered in English anyway!

Thanks sophia.:)
I was hoping that perhaps other members might be able to help with this.
So, I guess we have to find other ways to learn Portugese.
Ok Berlitz. Here we come.
Expect us to make some posts in your section next year for the practice, with silly mistakes.

What we could do with is a small section for members to use a mixture of Portuguese and English,
and we could have a laugh at eachothers mistakes, without feeling like an idiot.

I'll put money on it that it's us Brits making the mistakes and not our Portuguese cousins:-HoHo:-HoHo

But I must admit, could be fun.

Yes, I would like that. I promise not to laugh.
If people are serious about this like me, then we need to start looking for self help study courses and if we buy the same package, then we can all be synchronized with the same material.
There might be two options: European or Brazil. I think that the European would be better.
Here are few suggestions:
1 - Linguaphone:
http://www.linguaphone.co.uk/learn-portuguese-1.html
Portugese PDQ: is affordable at 23.96 quid, Postage UK 5.90, rest of the world 29.95 (Postage is too expensive for me, but I am willing to consider it)
The course is probably too easy. Might need to upgrade after a short while.

Portugese Complete Course: 223.92 quid, Postage UK 7.90, rest of the world 29.95

2 - Berlitz, Hugo, etc.

I am sure that there are a lot of other options in the UK. so if anybody has the time to look around in shops, I would appreciate reading about them.

I think that they are trying to converse in English for THEIR practice.
Be firm, and insist on speaking Portugese for your practice.

Sorry but im not the best person to give you guys lessons, because my english is poor. But the ideia is fine if you want to make a Topic, in this topic you can make questions, i think that a huge amount off Portuguese members can help you, is simple if you want i make a post in the portuguese section asking if someone want to help.
Like translate something or responding some question.
sorry my errors.:-bigsanta
