LED indicator flashing red every 5 seconds

My Satellite Setup
watching french TNT free view satellite TV
My Location
northern ireland
I have a TNT freesat reciever to watch French TV
The length of the run from the reciever to the motor on the dish is about 100 feet
everything has worked well for about a year untuil now

There is no signal from the dish to the reciever
I've checked the F connections several times - it works for about 2 or 3 minutes and then disappears.
I've tried a hardware reset on the DiSEqc 1.2 motor - smae thing it works for 2 or 3 minutes then disappears.
The LED light is green with a an intermittant red/ornage blink every 5 seconds or so

Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved

The short cable from the motor to LNB may well be dragged loose as the dish pans back and forth, if it is not tied to the mounting pole to restrain it.

If it isn't that, replace the cable run - it is probably suffering from water ingress.

To prove it, make up a short cable and, on a dry day, take Receiver/TV close to dish and connect up (If you can get elastictrickery that far!)

As you describe intermittent symptoms with the motor, I'd go for the latter suggestion.
 
Yup that would be my diagnosis as a likely fault with all the rain recently too.
 
Thanks for that -is the red blink a sympton of water ingress? What is so frustrating is that it works for a while and then disappears
would you suggest a better quality cable - I currently use SAC 100 CAI. Should I go for a better quality cable?
I have put the tape around the F connectors but would this still not keep out water?

The cable you have is good enough. Unless it's self amalgamating tape, it won't keep the water out

I can't understand why I can get it going for a few minutes only for it then to disappear
I have another receiver which I tried and it shows no signal so I don't think it's the French receiver
If I cut of a few inches at the outside end of the cable and do a new F-connector joint would that make any difference?

Look for sign of the water ingress the inner's of the cable will be blue as the copper oxidises..but it wont do any harm making the ends of again m8..
 
I cut of about 3 inches from the end of the cable and tried again.
Initially a signal got through but within a couple of seconds it had gone.
I also remade the connection inside
I take it I need to buy some new cable
 
Sounds like it -- but (qv Post #2) you could make up a short cable and test all the kit out adjacent to the dish: That should either confirm our diagnosis or point us in another direction.
 
Try to barrel the cable that goes into the motor to the lnb first ( I.e Bypass the motor) and see if you get a good steady signal. It may be that the motor itself is at fault.

If you get a good signal through the cable from just the lnb then it may well be the electronics in the motor that may be failing.

I tried an old piece of cable and got the same problem.
I tried to work out what to do from the reciever and eventually found a the factory re-set option which when I did that it all came back.
Still don't understand what happened but at least all seems to back to normal
 
Interesting - I'm very glad you got to the bottom of it, for now.

But if the issue recurs you might have a degradation issue with your Receiver - often, Power Supply Smoothing Capacitors are the culprit. Many manufacturers fit cheap components with a poor MTBF and they can leak and bulge. Generally thay are not too hard to replace.
 
It could have been an over-the-air update of the software that the box did not process properly.

Try tuning it to the main French station on TNT and leave it switched on overnight and perhaps over the next few days to give it a chance to update itself.
