My dog knocked the tv and ever since all I am getting is vertical lines and colour banding. Is it worth repairing? Can it be repaired? I hate to throw out a virtually brand new £500 TV set. Typical, it would go faulty as soon as it was out of warranty.fault.JPG

I would have thought repairable however finding somewhere that is capable of the repair is probably more of a challenge. Have you been in the back to check for damaged board, loose parts? Where did you buy it?

Worth taking the back off , since it is lighting up it could be something like a connector has come adrift.

In future, stick it on a wall bracket.

(The TV, or the dog - probably doesn't matter which)

Damaged lcd panel. The part should be available from lg. Fitting it is screws, connectors & taking care. Question is price.

Did it fall face down or on it's side?

If face down then it could be the LCD screen, if on it's side then a possible loose connection to/from the T-con PCB, I would give it a going over for a loose ribbon connection before sending it to the dust bin, a new LCD screen is almost as much as a new TV.

I've replaced LCD/LED panels, they are a royal pain in the backside to do the job right.

It was, it still is on a wall bracket. The dog banged her head on it from behind(the tv over hangs the window). If the panel needs replacing I might as well just buy a new tv. I bought it from Very. Had just finished paying for it. Grrr.

If the screen is damaged it is a write off. I might as well buy a new tv set and send this one off to land fill.

Am not risking my life opening up a tv set.

Had been using it as a computer monitor. It has screen burn. Don't know if it is worth repairing. Was thinking about upgrading to a 4k set at some point anyway.

I can't recall when LG last put piranhas in the back of televisions. unplugging it from the electricity a few hours before taking the back off should be sufficient, but if you like you could don a pair of marigolds.

...I put a mouse inside the TV and let it run around for a while, if still alive after 1 hour then I can proceed :O)

It's not a CRT. Only thing to look for in a LCD (and all modern electronics really), apart from unplugging the mains, is the large 400v capacitor in the powersupply. I do as as written above, wait for a while, it will discharge. + I short the cap to be sure there's nothing left.

Doing that with a large value (MegOhms) decent wattage resistor in the lead might be a good idea nevertheless!

Have you checked to see if you can get into the TV menu? If so can you check to see that the correct video resolution is set for a MAC / PC input?
A drop to the floor may have reset things.
And what input were you using for the computers video?

If you have let the TV sit unplugged from the AC main power overnight then it should be safe to open, most LED/LCD panel TV's don't have very large and dangerous caps in them anymore,(not like the old CRT types that is) and most of the internal switching power supply's are self draining on the large caps used for the power regulators.

If your going to open it, then a large coffee table or kitchen table is best, put down a nice soft beach towel to protect the front screen, as all the screws are on the back.

No satellite stuff for the moment (aside from a 43cm minidish that was on the house already), Samsung SyncMaster T27B550 Smart TV & Monitor, and a few computers...

If all else fails, toss it on ebay and recoup some money, people will buy up damaged sets to parts-harvest and re-sell things like power supplies, main PCBs, T-CONs, backlights, etc., so still some value in it, better that than sending off to landfill... :)

I already tried to sell it on eBay. Couldn't even get £50 for it.

I can't get into anything. All I get is what you see in the attached picture in an earlier post on this thread.

£50 really is a good price for a television without 'vision'.

What model number is on the back lable ?
