Further to the brief mention of progress in bringing Mint up to date here Linux Mint changes: no codecs by default

Beta version of the new Long Term Release, Mint 18, is now available in Mate or Cinnamon flavours.

This usually means we only have a couple of weeks to wait for the Stable release.

Even better news is that a clean install should not be necessary and an upgrade path from 17.3 will be provided.
 
Ive been having a look at the new Peppermint 7 which looks a decent enough distro.

Cheers, I'll hang on until the ironed-out release.
 
Stable Version in Cinnamon and Mint flavours now released for fresh installs.

Instructions for upgrading from 17.3 still awaited.

I installed Mint 18 Mate as a vm yesterday. Seems like the usual slick Mint release to me. Think I'll stick to my Mint 17.3 xfce for the foreseeable future though.

Having read through quickly, I'm beginning to think a clean install might be better for me.
 
On second reading, and after running a simulation as provided for in the instructions, it looks far easier than I thought.

Just backing up Data, then I shall light the blue touchpaper.
 
Just over 1GB to download .... could have been much more, but I already have the latest Kernel installed and am OCD about keeping anything and everything else up to date, so that has helped.

Time for a Bacon Butty.

Thankfully my Interweb is not heavily contended during working hours (5GHz WAN) so I'm downloading at full bore.
 
I'm sticking with Mint 17.3 xfce for the forseeable future - if it aint broke..........
I also just installed a really old laptop with command line only Debian so I can learn the command line stuff free from the distractions of a web browser, so here goes.
 
Yes, I thought of sticking, but the desire to twist took over!

60% downloaded now, and the bacon is ready.

Time for a Shave and a Shower ..... (Already done the other. Twice)

Over a thousand packages to upgrade.

But at least this way, as opposed to a clean Install I shouldn't have any reconfiguration to do.

Time will tell.
