Linux option ?

I have a good basic system but am snookered from experimenting by my computers being Apple. Everything available appears to be M.soft based.
Programers use for example. (I think) I don't want to add Windows to my system.
If I had a Linux based system I could load the relevant software on to a Mac.
Am I on the right track? Would such a receiver 'even out' the problem as at present or am I, as an elderly newbie, entering a minefield?.
Also; Which is the best open source software to use for the purpose.

What purpose?

If you want to run windows applications you could install a virtual machine application on the Mac (VirtualBox is available for mac) Builld a VM with the software and install Windowz on the VM.

You can then run Windowz (or Linux or whatever you want) as a guest operating system on the mac.

It depends how comfortable you are with the technology. If your knowledge in this area is not good, then yes you could be headed for a lot of pulling out of hair.
 
The trouble is, that wouldn't be the half of it.

I was playing with a Linux receiver only yesterday for the first time ever. If you struggle with the Technomate, a Linux job is going to be a darn sight worse.


Besides, the operating system of the target processor is irrelavant really, it is the tools required on the host end that are important, as the communication between such things is made by standard protocols/peripherals., USB,Ethernet,RS232 etc.

On the other hand, if you got a Linux receiver you wouldn't need to worry about what to watch on telly, as the receiver itself would keep you occupied for long enough.

I'm considering getting one for myself now, after having a brief encounter with one.:-rofl2

They're a piece of cake - but a piece you'll be eating for a good few weeks :-rofl2
