Magic eye not working

Hi,

I have a magic eye controlling a Sky box in another room which works perfectly until I turn on a fluorescent light situated just above the TV/magic eye at which point I have to hold the remote just a few inches away from the magic eye in order for it to work again. Turning off the light allows the magic eye to work perfectly again. If I move the TV/magic eye a foot or so forward of the light then it will work with the light switched on but I'd rather have the TV complete with magic eye flush against the wall (and so under the afore mentioned fluorescent light). The room ceiling lights do not affect the magic eye, only this fluorescent light situated beneath a kitchen unit just above it.

I'd be most grateful to anyone able to provide a simple solution to my problem.

Have you tried new batteries for the remote control? A different tube for the fluorescent lamp may also help (if it's a warm white, try daylight for instance).

Is it a striplight or a CFL?

I'm guessing it's a striplight judging by where it's located - if so, try a new starter.

That said, both striplights and CFLs are known to chuck out a lot of rubbish.

Your present fluorescent tube is emitting spurious infra red radiation which is overwhelming the infra red signals from your remote and is a very common problem nowadays with fluorescents and energy saving lights. Solutions vary from changing the tube, the starter or careful siting (as you have found) of the magic eye.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for that.

I've just tried replacing the batteries but no luck I'm afraid & I'd rather not change the tube colour as then it would be different to all the other under cabinet lights in the kitchen.

Thanks,
John W
