Being a relative pauper, and having previously registered my interest, I finally got an EMail from HMRC about an hour ago telling me the Online application system for the new-fangled Marriage Allowance was live.

Well, the HMRC bit itself was dead easy and SWMBO now gets £1060 of my unused PersonalAllowance.

However, in order to complete the application I was diverted off (as a first time user) to the UK.Verify bureaurocratic nightmare: Having selected a "provider", it took fully half an hour to submit all the personal details required and complete some very intrusive financial checks. Once done (and this Verification now applies for me perpetuity for all government Services), finishing the Tax Allowance transfer was just a couple of clicks.

One thing that is abundantly clear is that big bro now has access to an enormous amount of personal and private data - and shares it with contractors and don't be surprised if the Civil Rights mob cotton on quite soon and start kicking off.

And you trust the Government not to

a) lose the extra data

b) flog it off to one of their wealthy friends for marketing purposes

??

Can it only be done online? Is it not possible to fill in something on paper?

Online only, Paul.

All part of the drive to disenfranchise luddites!

I get the impression that the bulk of the data comes from one's "Credit Reference File" augmented by a few other bits and bats like Passport Number, Driving Licence Number and NI Number.

In my case, much as I would have taken umbrage at the privacy aspect in days gone by, such things have faded into irrelevance.

@PaulR

Sorry, it appears I was wrong about Online only for applying - just reading a critical article in the Sunday Times about people who for one reason or another were unable to prove who they were using the Gov.Verify system and it says that the application can be done by phone: No number given - and I suspect this is a new feature done in a rush as the Online system is (Inevitably, perhaps) not the bees nadgers after all.
