Measuring angles

Indeed: The erudite philosophy is making me feel inadequate

I mentioned several reasons for being able to measure vertical angles. Will speak about one of them now:
If we have some branded dish (dish I mean starting from 1,2m and up) we usually know it's offset angle, we also know exact location of dish and elevation of receiving satellite (it is better to use most Southern satellite). So, if we measure precisely angle of leaning of the dish "face" or line AB I showed on some pictures, than we indirectly can check whether LNB's phase center is located in antenna's focus.
Perhaps it is not really necessary to measure leaning of dish with precision up to 0.01, but why not if 2,5m long tool can provide this possibility?!
Another reason to be able to measure angles precisely is: reception results are nothing without comparison. If we get some signals from satellites we can not say they are maximum, we simply do not know they can be better, we believe we spent lots of time tuning antenna and nothing can be improved! So, in reality, we can only say we have some reception, even if it is fringe one. :D

And forgot to say, that here we can connect theory and practice! Those who have digital protractors could measure leaning of the dish (line AB and announce resulting angle, location, tuned satellite (no cheating ;)) and dish model.

I think it make no sense to messure that angle with even 0.1 degree .
at first the dish should be adjusted with the lnb covered with a wet towel and a secure satmeter .
With this senstive Lnb's we have nowedays and the strong signals , you can move the dish within 2 degrees up and down without any reaction at the signalbar of the receiver .

We know (on branded dishes) offset angle with the precision up to 0.1* and we also know elevation of satellites with the same precision. So, why do not we use antenna's face leaning (measured) as a check point?

Rimants , what i'm trying to tell is , the data You getting from members is not secure unless they adjust the elevation In the proper way .

The best way to conclude all this IMHO, is start posting your results in the fringe reception threads where all this counts to 90% of us at a guess.

Martin, good idea! But to do fair comparison of results we should come together with our dishes and do some tests. Do you think it is possible?!

Yes hard to do, But I can say I can match most peeps uk 1.2 setup, via posting and playing with fringe reception here in the uk, so at a guess I have tweaked my dish very well :), can you say the same

I can say so, but I can not say something like: I installed it perfectly and nothing to be done to improve reception! :p Can you say so, Martin?

No sorry I cant Rimants, I am always looking for that little bit more:(, but if you put all your theories to practice and posted your results in the fringe threads and you was getting good results, I would listen and do as you do :).

But until then I am a critic  sorry :)

The proof is in the pudding is my believe:eek:

I agree with you totally there Martin, likewise with my 1.0m CM motorised set up, I've noted it does well against other installs,:) I'm confident I couldn't get much out of it . . . . without redesigning it!:D

If you are ready to wait ~5 month than let's go for that.

That's fine Rimants, I would just like to see the results of the projects you've been doing, I think the theory has been explained now, I would like to see you move to the practical side and monitor results with people around you, but that is up to you pal:)

Yes fringe reception is the main feature here.

Live near the so called first null line for astra2 uk spot beam reception, have tuned my 125 gibi too receive 2E uk spot beam BBC etc, with day time reception SQ @ 80% but when the sat does its daily wobble nothing from ~1900 cet until next day. Only uk PSB spot beam channels are affected.
I say tuned as I do not get a sniff of the 2F bird.

Will not get into discussions on how the dish is tuned, its ~1,5 meters above ground level so easy access, done by trial and error and loads of patience.

While family was shopping in shop I do not like, I went to "normal" shop and found aluminum plank which does not bend easily. 2,5m and 1,8 meters where available, so, I took 1,8m one, enough to work with 1,2m antennas.
I will not use this plank for precision measuring of angles directly, but by putting it over antenna's face I will be able to measure antennas depth and elevation with help of additional tools with the precision up to 0,1* and 0,1mm.
