Just an asteroid

It completes an orbit around the Sun every 436.604 days (1.2 years) and every 6 years comes very close to Earth, within 0.002 AU. These close encounters give Bennu a high probability of impacting Earth in the late 22nd century.

[1402.5573] Orbit and Bulk Density of the OSIRIS-REx Target Asteroid (101955) Bennu

Update on mission to asteroid Bennu | EarthSky.org

After the publication of the shape model and astrometry based on radar observations obtained in 1999, 2005, and 2011, it was possible to estimate the Yarkovsky acceleration and to revise the impact assessment. The current (as of 2014) best estimate of the impact probability is a cumulative probability of 0.037% in the interval 2175 to 2196. This corresponds to a score on the Palermo scale of −1.70.

Welcome to Bennu!

Apparently water has been discovered in the rocks, not surprising since it is rather coold out there, but the main interest is the spectacular landscape that has to be chartered for a convenient cargo pickup point.

When I saw this topic title I thought it might be a reference to a former soap idol.

Bennu is rotating faster than it should and has been ejecting rocks into space, some of which are orbiting with Osiris Rex.

Shortly after the discovery of the particle plumes on Jan. 6, the mission science team increased the frequency of observations, and subsequently detected additional particle plumes during the following two months. Although many of the particles were ejected clear of Bennu, the team tracked some particles that orbited Bennu as satellites before returning to the asteroid’s surface.

The following statement has got the conspiracists chatting.

the asteroid's surface is older than expected, but shows evidence of more recent activity..... :pBennu.jpg
