Mel Smith: 'Amazingly Talented' Comedian Dies

Griff Rhys Jones has led the tributes to his long-time comedy partner Mel Smith who has died from a heart attack at the age of 60.
The pair were most famous for their shows Not the Nine O'Clock News and Alas Smith and Jones.
Jones, who had been friends with Smith for 35 years, said the comedian was "a force for life" to everybody who met him, adding he was "a gentleman and a scholar, a gambler and a wit".
He also said: "I still can't believe this has happened. We are all in a state of shock. We have lost a very, very dear friend.
"He inspired love and utter loyalty and he gave it in return. I will look back on the days working with him as some of the funniest times that I have ever spent."

Great shame, Not the Nine O'clock News and then Alas Smith and Jones were brilliant, some real landmark comedy.

SWMBO and I are shocked.

Very funny man - I can never forget the Smith & Jones "Interview" style sketch where Smith was the capturer and guardian of the latterly civilised Gorilla "Gerald".



"When I first caught Gerald he was completely wild."


"Wild? I was absolutely livid."

I hope the BBC this time does a real tribute, to another great comedian, they didn't for Eric Sykes, and others.
The last comedy series, I remember him in, was Colin's Sandwich, I seem to remember him working in a dull job and writing horror stories. I enjoyed Not the Nine O'Clock News, and Alas Smith & Jones.

Heard the news on the radio as I was going out this evening and I was quite shocked. He has looked quite ill over the last few years and went very thin. He was also a good actor and was most recently seen in that exellent series Dancing on the Edge as the hotel manager Sclesinger.
