Another early evening BBC presenter died a few days ago, Cliff Michelmore. Maybe the one you had in mind?

He goes back even further - the Tonight programme, which predated Barratt's Nationwide. And set the agenda for that kind of newsy, whimsical output. (Alan Whicker, Fyfe Robinson et al).
