Mon ordinateur dit 'non'

Not sure what could cause that glitch TBH Pete in fact owing to the number of PC's and lappies I service for friends and family I have to be very careful to avoid the syncing.

No matter now, I have successfully imported my bookmarks via USB. It only remains to gather all the documents and photo's together and transfer them as well. I'll then see what to do about the other laptop. Probably format the hard drive and load Linux Mint.

No need to Format the old HDD, Pete: The Mint Installer will do all that is required :-righton

Not sure if you already have a Mint .iso lying around somewhere, but I commend you to Download the new Mint 15 "Olivia" (I've got the Cinnamon Edition and adore it).

I do have a Mint edition on dvd, though not sure what "flavour" it is......In view of Sunday's tennis, will they be bringing out a "Murray" edition?...........I'll get my coat..

:-laugh

No Coat needed - made I chortle, that.

Mint 15 has only been out a very few weeks and older versions are not really upgradeable, so recommend start from scratch.

I use Mint 15 Cinnamon and Mate on different computers. I prefer Cinnamon, and I have to say LMDE Cinnamon is worth a shot, it's my main OS now.

Having done a little "googling" it looks like a software rather than a hardware problem. I am offered to attempt a recovery install but it will wipe all on the C drive (not sure if it's designating the C partition or the whole physical drive) but if I have to move stuff onto the other partition I might as well just load files I need onto a memory key anyway. When I have done, I might try the recovery part. BTW, is it possible to put Mint onto a USB key and load it as an os onto the laptop or do you need to boot from a dvd? If the latter I'm knackered as the dvd drive refuses to function other than to play cd's.

Yes, you can make a Bootable USB Stick, Pete. Your existing Mint equipped device should be able to do that for you easily, either via "USB Image Writer" (If installed) or perhaps by right-clicking on the .iso and select Create Live USB (Or some such).

Suggest you use a 2GB or 4GB one >> anything over 8GB doesn't tend to work owing to summat to do with Formatting (Can't recall the details), and a 1GB might be pushing it a bit as the Distro is not at all far short of 1GB.

Yes, I have the USB writer and a 2GB memory stick. A question though.....Will loading Mint run alongside Vista or delete the C drive contents by over writing?

and I am ca va bien...ta very much...have been watching Le Tour ending in St.Malo on tele which took up some valuable laptop tinkering time...

You can dual-boot quite happily: Just check the relevant Options as it Installs.

BUT, you must recover/re-install/fix Vista first to your satisfaction first, coz Windows is unforgiving and will wipe Mint if it's there already!

The Mint Installer will detect any existing OS(s), ask you which you want to keep and then offer you a decent size Mint Partition. You can resize the latter at that point if you think it not enough, but I find the default options are always good. 50GB should be far more than ample for your usage. (Assuming your Hard Drive is 120GB or more).

It really is very easy - I managed it!

PS: Having dual-booted a Linux Distro of one sort or another with Win7 for a couple of years, I recently "let go" and did a clean install of Mint only. It was very liberating! No regrets.

Pardon >>> "Je ne regret rien"

Innit.

Made a bootable memory stick this morning with Mint and it's now running the other laptop. I think I'll go through the now more easily accessible files and start to transfer them over to this one. I'm amazed how easily Mint runs from the USB and how intuitive it is to navigate. If Windows becomes more difficult to run for those who don't want to play catch up all the time with the latest hardware I can see these Linux distros getting more and more popular.

My friend who looks after this place for me each year while I go and visit my Mum, recently had to change his netbook and bought a second hand Samsung with Windows 7. He had it two hours before changing the O/S to Linux.

Yes, Mint is the Bees Boll***s!

Someone (who?) let the dogs out
