Motor forgets positions

My Satellite Setup
1m Orbital and Supreme Intelligent Dark Motor, TBS 6925 and Tevii S464 PC cards, TM5402 M1
My Location
York, North Yorkshire
This is an odd one. Installer fitted 1m Orbital with a Navigator #2 (black) motor in August. Motor worked fine in DiSECQ 1.2 mode since then but, suddenly, it started to overshoot satellites. On the advice of the installer, I re-stored the positions as he thought due to the metal motor, it could be grease in the bearings settling. However, it has since started to forget motor positions every few days, so I have switched to USALS. USALS works fine but, even with this, every so often it will goto the extreme east limit. Doing a Goto 0 and then starting again fixes this though. Any idea what's going on here? Not had much help with the installer - several promises from him to come out, not one fulfilled yet :(
 
Could be a faulty motor.
 
Sounds like a faulty motor, I think as well. Are you using it only with the TM5200?

No, trying it with my TBS 8920 PC card too. USALS works fine, again, but DiSECQ 1.2 is hit and miss - can store the positions one day and they're forgotten the next. Downloaded the channel list from my TM too to make sure each satellite is stored in the correct preset position for DiSECQ 1.2 to work properly on both the card and the box (e.g. 1 for Hotbird, 18 for Astra 2 etc).
 
I would suggest just leaving on the tm5200 for a while ( for a long enough period in which it would normally go wrong) and see if you still get the problem.

I had a similar problem for a while with my PC receiver, the motor occasionally losing position, usually by a few degrees. I diagnosed the problem as bad channel entries in my software. A few channels/transponders had scanned in with the Goto position set at zero (the default). I weeded them out and stopped using that scan method. No problems since.

Interesting. I tend to use SmartDVB with its seperate DiSECQ console for moving the motor or move it by entering parameters in a piece of seperate software called TBS-IP Data so this shouldn't be an issue here really, unless two receivers operating the motor is confusing it somehow?
 
By the way, the motor forgot positions twice over the weekend despite being drive just by the TM5200, always within 48 hours of the satellite positions being stored. It might be a faulty motor or, a simple hardware reset may be all that is required to get the motor working properly, but it so high up and I don't have a head for heights. Plus, I can't get the installer out, so may have to make to do with just USALS for now :(
 
Well we had a similar discussion on DS a few years ago (In one of my other hats) and I'd have helped you out if I too had a head for heights!

Ah yes! I remember now. The irony is that was with a SG-2100clone being driven by the TM-5200 alone. This time it's a Navigator #2 with a TBS card too. I did wonder if the TM might be at fault, but I have done a master reset and the TBS card has had similar issues too. USALS is fine with the card or the TM but just DiSECQ 1.2 is failing. The positions are stored in the motor and, at random intervals of less than about 48-72 hours or so, every preset defaults to the factory default. Very strange, but is it possible that the TM might be causing this?
 
Not sure, really.

If it were mine (One at, and the other near, ground level!) I'd be doing a paper-clip jobbie on the Motor first to see if the problem cleared.

Not heard of Motor Control issues with Technomates, so it could be you are a pioneer!


Anyway, it's no hardship to only have USALS reliably at your disposal: If you want to shift all Satellite positions by the same small amount (to cater for mechanical slippage in poor weather etc.) then you can simply add or subtract a few tenths from the Longitude input to USALS and if you only want to trim one Satellite, leave Longitude alone and just Edit the Satellite "position" (ie the global tag accompanying the name label).

I agree, never had a technomate malfunction with a motor , but had various motors malfunction one way or another. Various faults including forgetting where reference is, zipping off aimlessly in one direction, and not stopping in the right place. Sometimes the hardware reset has cured it, other times the fault has re-occurred.

I dont know what the latest navigator motors are like, but i would not trust that make , as their previous model was a pile of poo.

Yes, I found out about the Mark 1 Navigators a bit too late :( I think this is a Mark 2 as it was described to me, by the installer, as a metal geared motor and has a black housing (didn't the Mark 1's have silver?). My old SG-2100 (or clone) stopped working after 18 months of what was fairly light to moderate use at best after stopping at random and eventally just giving up the ghost completely. I'll stick with what I have for now, whilst it still works with USALS, but if I ever did want to change it, what is the best motor in your experience? I've seen the thread here and seem to get mixed opinions as to what is best.
 
The TM5200 is an odd beast, completely different firmware to the other models I have used (1000/1500/6800/5402)

I have had to send one back as I couldn't get on with it, never bought another.
 
You sure you mean the Tm5200? Ive had two myself and pretty much the same as all the others, the only odd one out I've come accross is the tm3200.

Motor wise I don't know which is the best, I tend to only use darkmotors and that's only because that's what my local wholesaler sells. I've never seen one fail, but only because they are relatively new I suppose. seen a few technomate models fail after a year or two. Also had to take down a stab, that had been there 12 years!
