motorised system in Spain?

Will be Monte Pego on the Northern Costa Blanca
We have a large dish here in Spain which allows us to get Sky (BBC for me, Sports for cricket for him!!).

In the UK we also had a motorised system for him - I never enquired too closely why?!! Actually we brought the kit but were told the dish was bent although it looks OK. My husband keeps rabbiting on about getting another motorised system. We enquired locally but were told that there were so very few unencrypted channels available it wasn't worth it. Good I thought I can have some new shoes!!!!

Anyway he isn't a language speaker although it could be speech isn't his main priority! As far as I'm concerned it's a waste of money unless I can get some quality UK drama free. If he could get more cricket that would suit him but really I'd prefer he were gardening!!

Any ideas anyone of what might be worth having? We really cannot afford any other subscriptions than the Sky we have already.

Incidentally our local dealer mentioned that they have yet to try a Sky HD box that works properly out here. Apparently the recordings fail or some such. If this is correct I'm glad we didn't buy one although we have an HD TV.

There's LOADS of free channels if you have a motorised dish (even more if you have a patched receiver)

I don't even know where to begin.. but as far as English language programing goes, the entire Digitv package (HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Digifilm etc.), BBC World, MBC (5 channels), Eurosport, Fox News/CNN, Discovery Science, Dubai One, Fox Series/Films etc etc.

Because your in Spain, reception of Nilesat 7w and Badr 26e will be a doddle.

IMHO, After you have discovered all that TV, you could probably drop your Sky Subscription and live off free tv!!

Edit: and by the way, BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, ITV2, BBC3, Channel 4, E4 are all FREE - You do NOT need a Sky Subscription to view these!!!

You probably will find that the cricket (and any other sport he watches) is available elsewhere for free... I'm sure someone else here can let you know.

Reason I say - is the best thing you could do is motorise your existing dish.. but that would mean dropping your Sky sub (and you'll still get BBC/ITV etc. for free)
 
It depends how big the dish is. Motorising a 2.4m dish for example could work out a lot more expensive than getting a new 1m and sticking a diseqc motor on it.

Out of interest, what size dish would the OP need to receive 7W consistantly in Spain?
 
80cm does the job nicely for arabsat and nilesat here in spain (use one myself for them!). apart from all the free channels on the astra 28's, then the mbcs dubais fox etc are the next best channels to go for. as long as you can get along with the arabic subtitles at the bottom of the screen - they are hardcoded into the picture and cannot be turned off!

if this is not what you want, then just get a twin lnb, another cable, and another receiver and you can still get the free bbc itv etc from your existing dish...

i dont think cricket is free on any other satellites available around here - there are not many european countries that take a great interest in it
 
And I know just where they are coming from (Euros re cricket!!!) No I don't mind it really. Luckily he isn't a footie fan!!!

I'd be a bit worried motorising the biggie. We get tremendous winds here and our first satellite blew away complete with it's concrete base!!

A secondary small one would be OK I think. Then he might not moan when I watch Holby City - my only vice I never watch the other soaps!!

i wouldnot recomment motorising a biggie sa it may not realign properly again for the key bbcs and itv, which require almost perfect alignemtn.

and yes especially on MP it can get a bit windy up there...i think it was on MP they measure gust / winds inexcess of 150kph back in january...
