Ive been having issues with my decade and a bit old win7 desktop recently. Performance was awful - laggy, web pages not loading properly, cooling fans howling all the time. Task manager showed MsMpEng.exe was running at 30-55% processor usage all the time. Being an old Pentium 4 Dell Dimension 5150 it couldnt handle this sort of abuse from one of the windows interior processes..... This is part of the virus scanner / malware killer suite. Google showed this isnt an uncommon issue - it gets dozens of hits going back a few years with various explanations, mostly seemingly unlikely to me. My own personal explanation is that MS just screwed up again in one of the updates. Anyway. Ive uninstalled windows security essentials, and put Comodo Anti Virus on it. All working fine again now (or as fine as a 15 year old computer can be on the modern internet!).
