Just got my first ever satellite pictures! Thanks mainly to advice I've followed on this forum!
As exciting as when I first saw colour trade test films ( The Weald of Kent ? ) on my parent's Baird 710 dual 625/405 receiver in 1967.
Went down this route after finding after Digital Switch Over we were only going to get Freeview Lite ( from relay ).
I have temporarily fixed my dish to a clothes line post which is far from vertical, in the back garden. I lined up the dish to 28.2E. Using a cheap £ 6 Atlanta ASF304+ satellite finder from World of Satellite. I managed to tune in 28.2E surprisingly quickly. Had to slightly tip the dish down to compensate for the tipping back of the cloths line. Got BBC1 and NHK World HD although don't have an HD telly.

Next I attached the motor now I knew the system worked. Pointed south using a Dishpointer landmark,
set the VU+ Duo to use positioner and entered my long & lat then manually
tuned into 0.8W Thor 5 BTV-1 Telenor 11247 V S1 24500 7/8 and after a little re-positioning got an animated colour-bar signal, getting SNR 83% and AGC 89%. Am using version 7.0 VU flash image. Curious thing is the Duo only shows Thor 2,3 (0.9W) in its selection menu.

Went on to get:

42E TV25 12588V 2260 5/6 67% SNR 84% AGC. If I 'pulled' lightly on the dish I could increase SNR to 73%
28.2E NHK World HD 11224 V 27500 2/3 SNR 79% AGC 97% Anime News item
13E Arte HD 11681 H 27500 S2 3/4
9E TF1 SUISSE 12034 V S2-8PSK 27500 3/4
5W France 2 22591 V 2000 2/3 Super Hero gets attacked in street.
30W HISPASAT High TV 10730 H 27500 3/4 S1 SNR 83% AGC 91% seemed to be showing some 3D magic show!

I was surprised I got this much with such a non-vertical pole!

Tried 40.5W NSS 816 3803 27500 3/4 L

Set to Left Circular but got nothing. Thought the frequency looked a bit low. Perhaps not compatible.

Haven't figured out how to add these channels to Favorites or how the channel numbers work. Just select the Satellites menu then select service then pick a channel. I prefer to enter them in manually as in auto I got 995 Channels just from 28.2E. Also, couldn't record onto a USB stick - which works fine playing back H.264 on the Duo.
There was a thing that said path /something/HDD. I suspect this needs to point to the USB key somehow. Did get the on-board browser to work once I'd connected the Duo
to my HP network switch-real pain without a QWERTY kb but don't initially intend to have it connected to the house network.

I've now taken it all down as its due to be put up properly on the front of the house.

Congratulations - & well done on getting up and running so quickly - we have had a few folks take days and never get a picture.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the satellite hobby - the nice thing is there is always something new to look at on the European birds :)

these type of frequencies are for C band transmissions -- and require a different l.n.b. --
and mostly a much larger dish is needed -

regards - :)

Welcome to the forum N1501

A nice way of easing yourself into the satellite world. Will be interested in seeing the permanent setup as and when you have it installed :)

Thanks guys for all your comments and likes.

Have decided to ask Robbo to install my dish as I don't fancy trying to fix the dish high up on a ladder ( or hiring a tower ). In the meantime I telneted into the Duo from my Linux laptop and found the usb key was at /media/HDD so set this for my default record location as I don't want an internal noisy drive. Downloaded
File browser and Satellite Finder plug-ins.

As the dish is not being put up 'til next week I decided to use Android Dishpointer app to see what extreme satellite positions I could try from the cloths line in the back garden which doesn't have such a good view of the Arc. Found I should be able to get 53E and 45W.

Set dish on line without the motor and set Tuner B to single/simple and entered:

45W 11044 V 44950 3/4

and after a little tweaking with dish position and using Sat Finder and the Atlantic meter found MUZ-TV and Russian Disney 'kanal' 60%/80%

and managed to record these to USB stick also recorded NHK World HD ( 28.2E ).

Next tried to find 45W, 11606 H 1852 5/6. This was harder to get but by using Dishpointer.com ( web ) and plug-in Sat Finder I eventually picked up RASDTV 55%/71%

Finally installed ( by Robbo - great job ) on south facing wall ( perpendicular to 14W )

Asked Robbo to use two K's as I felt happier with that - Aluminium Dish and motor seemed quite heavy to me.

Will probably Hammerite galvanised metal work to match wall.

SNR AGC
45W RASDTV 65 73
30W HIGH TV (3D) 96 97
27.5W ITV1 HD 86 89
5W France 2 79 95
0.9W BTV-1 76 95
9E M6 SUISSE HD 82 97
13E Arte HD 91 99
19.2E RTL 99 99
23.5E RAI HD 92 95
26E EBS 40 86
28.2E BBC HD 99 99
42E TV25 76 93
53E Disney ru 54 80

53E 6% lower SNR than clothes line poll in back garden - could be due to tree.

Watching down converted HD on 30" Thomson CRT. Looks very good. Down converted versions noticeably
sharper than SD equivalents.

Connected ( the blue cable in the photo ) Vu+ Duo to network.

Using my Linux laptop ( Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ) I used gFTP to transfer Sherlock to
/usr/lib/enigma2/python/Plugins/Extensions. Disappointed to see BBC HD as 1440 unlike others using 1920.

Downloaded DreamBoxEdit and ran it on Linux under WINE ( Wine Is Not an Emulator - windows emulator ),
managed to edit my Favourites and create a UK and French bouquet, just couldn't get Favourites to work from remote control.

A very colourful dsh, I would have stuck with the mid-grey version on your brickwor/pebbledash, but as long as you are happy, that's what counts.

Oh.... they do a blue one now? I wouldn't mind replacing my brick red one with the blue one!

Although, I suppose I could just paint mine with any colour I wanted...

By the way, the 53E signal vary throughout the day for me. I get about 59% in the mornings but 65% in the evenings on 11044V - same dish as yours but further west.

I'm a complete newb to the satellite scene ( forced into it by DSO UK Terrestrial Analogue TV switch off April 18th 2012 ) but I've been using Linux since the mid-nineties and messing about with VCR's ( Philips N1501 to name but one ) , 405/625 tellies, Fortran punched cards, ASCII paper tape, Tele-Types, Nascom 2 computer etc etc for years.

Yeah, I hated that with my Sky+ box. Was really noisy! VU+ almost runs silently though.

Great setup by the way.
