My Motorised 1m Gibertini

Finally got round to putting up a few pics of my 1m motorised Gibertini.
I put it up on the East facing wall to shelter it from the Western gales that blow up the valley.
It has an unobstructed view of the southern sky from 30W to 60E .
Its nice and sheltered where it is,I usually park it at 30W so that its turned in nicely towards the house.
The brackets are 24 inch T brackets.
Its a Superjack D120+ motor ,Smart Titanium Lnb and connected to a Dreambox 500s.
I reinforced the motor clamps with 2 steel plates as the supplied clamps were poor metal that bent easily.
I'm picking up around 24 satellites at the moment .

Excellent stuff - And you aren't missing a great deal in the further Western arc unless you really dig Religious and Chinese stuff from Intelsat 1R/3R (which is available elsewhere anyway) and can do without the occasional (nay, rare) Sports Feeds from 58W.

I put alot of time and planning into finding the optimum position to place the dish.
I could have viewed all satellites if I put it on the South wall but it would have been too exposed .I'd be fearful of it blowing off line in high winds .
I thought about the East wall but wasnt sure if I could see too far West.
I used Google Earth and Dishpointer and reckoned I'd get to 18W ok.
I then had to worry about the edge of the roof jutting out over the dish and it I had enough clearance.
I worked out the angle of elevation ~31 for my highest sat and measured it out on the wall.
I gave myself an extra 5 degrees for comfort and then marked it out.
It was a balancing act between having the dish back far enough so as to be sheltered and not too far back as I couldnt see far enough West or clear the roof.
I started drilling and prayed my calculations were ok.
I had some difficulty at the start picking up satellites ,Usals wasnt working very well so I switched to manual positioning and that worked perfectly.
I now have every sat from 30w to 53E bar 11w,7w,4w,21.6e,26e and 31e.
I think I am too far west to pick any of them up anyway.

Its sheltered from the West ,North and South West .
Southerly winds can give it a bit of a wobble but so far so good.
The Superjack motor is very quiet and fast enough ,very happy with it.

It's quite easy to incorrectly input the wrong Longitude & Latitude figures.

I double and treble checked the settings using google earth,dishpointer and a few other sources.
It just wouldnt drive the dish to the correct positions.
In the end I gave up and did it manually as I read a good few people had similar issues with Usals and the 500s.

On a side note my diy skills are now not only limited to satellite installations.
After fine tuning the dish and admiring my work I put my big right foot through the roof and broke a good few slates.
I had to reslate some of the roof (new slates are noticeable in some pics) to appease the ball and chain.lol

The dish is the Gibertini OP 100L .
The dish face is aluminium but the rear bracket is steel which adds considerable weight .
Its a nice dish,very well made and doesn't rust .

I am thinking of making a few changes to the setup .
I currently have 2 T brackets and because of the 24" offset and the weight of the dish ,there is a slight bend on them.The pole is still plumb though ,has never needed adjusting.
I may switch one of the brackets for a K bracket just for peace of mind.

The spacing between the brackets is only around 45cm but I think thats sufficient.

So far the setup has served me very well ,the Achilles heel is the bracket on the motor.
Its made from very poor metal and bends when you tighten it .The clamps also bend .
Hence the motor can move westwards on the pole in strong south easterly gales ,which is a nuisance.
I will have to reinforce the bracket or get a new motor ,Clarke Tech HH390 looks the biz

I have one of these with a 1.2M dish attached and can testify to it's robustness! It's well made and engineered with heavier duty brackets than other motors. It didn't budge when there were strong winds here the other week. I think it would handle a 1M Gibi easily.

Maby a bracket like these had been a better choise for your setup. I have never used the T and K bracket but i see that they are offen used in UK , the one i show in pics. are more used in sweden. In my case the bracket is bolted trough the panel and in to the beam at backside.

Yes it's there, at the bracket in the middle. From the beginning i had only two of these brackets and a 3.0m x 50mm pole, was not good enough. So i put up a 3.5m x 60mm pole and one more bracket at the lowest end of the pole, and now its far better .I also had to put up an extra pole to stabilze.

No problem with this setup Laminas 120cm, Clarke-Tech HH390, has been working great for 2,5 years, also in stormy weather . Checked the install yesterday and all rock solid,no backlash in motor.
