Nearly there but need help please

My Satellite Setup
1.1 dish, superior dark motor, titanium quad lnb, humax vaci 5300i
My Location
newcastle, uk
Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and satellites in general. I am usually a quick study though but have been getting confused with talk about multi switches etc.

All I really want to do is be able to watch the footie whilst the bairns watch their films and cartoons etc.

For this to happen I know I will need 3 recievers.

As the football and films are generally on different satellites (from what I gather) I may need to be able to access more than one satellite at the same time. This is not imperitive though.

The main thing I need is to be able to watch 3 different programs on 3 different recievers. It would also be a bonus if I could record on at least one of these and 1 must be HD compatible for the sitting room tv.

I have nothing set up at the moment though I will be bringing in someone who quoted £115 to do the set up as long as I provide the equipment and do the internal (inside the house) wiring.

So far I have a 1.1m dish
***** superior dark motor Diseqc H-H mount
titanium quad lnb o.1
60m cabling
Dish mount and pole settings

At present I only have a Humax VACI 5300i reciever

My questions are these:-

Do I need anything else like multi switches etc?
Do I have to get the same manufacturer model recievers as my existing one to watch tv in 3 rooms?

Initially I thought that if I ran 2 cables from 2 lnb's to the sitting room reciever I could then record, and then 1 cable to bedroom a from lnb and another to bedroom b from the final lnb.

But reading the forums, the whole multi switch thing has confused me.

Thanks ever so much to anyone who wants to help and I know its lengthy so also thank you for taking the time to read it.

The motor will have the disadvantage that if three channels are being watched at the same time, moving the dish will cause someone to start screaming.
Consider using one more dish or use multi LNB setup instead.

Thanks for that. I only got planning permission on condition that I removed the sky dish that was there from the houses previous occupants so I reckon that I will not be able to have more than one dish, well at least south facing anyhow.

When you say multi lnb what do you mean? I.e. coudl I still use the quad lnb and maybe get a couple of twins as well, or is there a specific device?

I apologise for my naivity and thanks again for your help

If it is your house the council regs are quite clear, max of two dishes one no bigger than 1.0 mtr the other 60cm no planning permission required, outside of those guidelines yes it is needed.

There are different lnb's available, basic lnb's single output, quads and octos with multiple outputs to supply a sat signal to multiple stb's in the property say one in each room. Then there are monobloc lnb's where you can have differential angles within the lnb thus a 6 deg monobloc will give you two distinct satellites 6 degrees apart, these are available in other angles and they contain a built in disecq switch so only have one output lead which can be switched from a disecq compliant stb.

Thanks for that. That is very strange indeed. I was told by Newcastle city council that I needed planning permission for anything over 1.0m.

I was asked if any dishes were already on the wall and I replied that there was a sky one and they said it would have to be removed. I think I will keep it there after installing the motorised one and see what they say about it, now that I have your very helpful link to the regs.

With respect to the lnb's, if you were me how would you do it?

Reading your post it is unclear to be honest as to who wants to watch what and on which satellites.

You can have several LNBs (Single or twins) setup to different satellites
and using the same dish.
This has the advantage of speed (moving a motors takes time and is noisy, especially at night).
You will need a special kit to help you with the setup. Take a look at this kit from Inverto. You probably need to buy inverto LNBs to go with it.

I suggest that you would select the satellites that will give you optimal viewing, and then check if you can fit them all on the same dish.
I suppose Astra 28.2E, Hot Bird 13E, Astra 19.2E would be possible candidates.

Ah right, sorry about that.

One bedroom will be mainly for discovery channel type programs, cartoons and the odd film.

The other bedroom is mine and will really only be used at night for films or the odd comedy.

The sitting room one will be for films and footie, plus recording and hd capable.

Will I have to go with humax (as 1 of my recievers will be the humax vacci 5300i) when I buy the other 2 recievers or can I get the likes of technomate for the other 2 rooms?

Also do you have to get cards for all 3 recievers or will they work off 1 which is decrypting the channels?

Here is a link to the Inverto MultiConnect LNBs

(BTW: This is only a suggestion. There might be other better setups, so shop before you buy).

You need to be more specific from where you want to get your programs, we cannot guess. If you are wanting to share subscriptions this will complicate things even more. Do we assume you want English based films, football, cartoons etc, if so are you looking at Sky? that being the case why are you selecting a 1.1mtr motorised dish?, I'm sorry you need to be absolutely specific before you start what you want to watch, an installer cannot guess what you want to watch, please state the packages and on which satellites you wish to watch them, as this may determine specific equipment requirements and subscription requirements

With never having a satellite dish before I don't know which satellites show which programs, apart from the obvious astra to sky that is. I figured part of the enjoyment would be finding all of these channels and so want access to as many satellites as I possibly can.

I won't be watching sky.

With the football I am not bothered which language it is in. One of the main reasons I invested in the motorised dish was because getting newcastle on pc often caused serious lag. I will therefore buy any card which gets me able to watch them.

With the films I dont mind it being in a language apart from english as long as it has subtitles although English would be preferred of course. As with the footie I will get any card I need to watch them.

However, these cards are expensive and I would much prefer not to have to buy 3 film cards and 2 footie ones.

I hope that makes it clearer. Sorry for being a pain.

Nearly forgot, the installer said he could set it up to get the widest possible spectrum including thor, astra etc

Most foriegn cnannels are not intested in the English championship, most are only interested in the premier "big 4".

sport italia shows a few games in the clear at 12.5 west,Plus the bbc are showing some games.

If you want more than one satellite loction the the same time you will need a few LNBs on one fixed dish, plus you need to decide which packages you want and how much you are prepared to pay. have a look at saturdays sport at liveonsat to get an idea of what is available and where, but there is very little worthwhile content in the clear.

I already have bought a motorised dish it just hasn't been fitted yet.
I know the championship games are hard to find and even have difficulty via the pc but it isn't so much for this season as next when we are in the premiership. In an ideal world I could get them this season of course but am resigned to the fact that it will be nearly impossible this season.

It is mainly in preperation for next season I have bought it.

Long way to yet marra!!

TBH only 1w has much still open (I.E. able to uncramble with the right software) and i doubt that will last much longer.

If aljazeera sport had the premier ship i would get that, and other than that there is very expensive sky italia or difficult to get Nile sat.

But if you have your motorised dish pointed at a paticular sat, the kids will only be able to watch channels on that sat.

If you were watching them last season the 'serious lag' may not have been wholly down to your pc.

...Hi m8...
As a general rule of thumb ..
If a channel is worth watching ie ..has general entertainment value which would appeal to most famillies...
..eg movies sport or general appeal such as that offered by sky 1 ...then they will be subscription services ..regardless of which satellite you are pointed at..
Like Sky subs ...these are expensive ..if even available outside the country of origin..
..and whilst most non UK based subscribtion services are generally broadcast in that countries native language ..they often _do_ offer a secondary audio carrier (for example with films) which are transmitted with the origional soundtrack ...or in some cases the origional audio but with on screen subtitles in the providers native language..

You can't obviously be pointing your dish directly at more than one sat at a time ..but as has been already mentioned it is possible to use the side lobes of the dish to collect transmissions from adjacent satellites by using carefully positioned 'additional' lnbs..
..and again ..you will need additional receivers connected to those lnbs ..possibly with cams and subscription cards to produce pictures..
The problem is that doing this with a motorised dish will certainly upset other family members if you move the dish whilst they are watching ..in order to point at the sat _you_ have chosen..
