Hello.

I am completely new to the world of satellite and appreciate any help.

We are working on a commercial satellite setup to acquire multiple satellite feeds. Before I consult with a professional installer (which we'll definitely need to do) I wanted to arm myself with the basic knowledge and general terminology.

We are targeting FTA satellite feeds, primarily Arabic and Turkish content. I haven't hammered out exactly which satelittes we'll use but likely Hotbird, Astra, Arabsat, Nilesat... other suggestions? We are looking for the most Arabic content that we can get in Europe.

We will be feeding the sat signals into 5-10 media servers which will convert and encode the signals.

Some questions:

- In order to cut down the number of dishes, what would we require on the roof? I believe each dish can handle multiple LNB's but is there anything else we should consider for the best possible signal and quality?

- Is there any way to cut down the number of cable runs? Something like a multi-port switch? I assume having separate cable run for each dish is the best quality, correct?

- What is the best quality cable and connectors we should consider? Someone mentioned using SDI cable, does that make sense?

- What is the most professional and best quality satellite dish we can buy, that is not too large (thinking 30-40 inches)? What multiple LNB setup would go with that?

- Any other considerations for a professional install that will have to be low maintenance, very high quality, and receive the most channels?

Thanks for any/all help!!

Understood. But any help is greatly appreciated. Even if you can help me understand the general requirements here so I dont get ripped off by the installer, that would be helpful.

Thanks.

You'll need to reconsider your choice of satellites - their footprints are way out of reception capabilities in the USA.

The OP did not state that he was going to locate the receiving dishes in the USA.

My personal interpretation of the post was that the OP has listed the USA as their personal location in their forum profile but that they wish to locate the receiving dishes in Europe and use media servers to stream the content to wherever

We're going to need a better location

Will no doubt have to be Central/Southern Europe for the choice of satellites given.

Yes you got it, we will set up shop in Europe or Middle East. I think we can get Hotbird and maybe Badr-4 from UK, right?

UK not the best place for BADR-4, also not the best place for rebroadcasting video streams, as if the original provider complains, they'll be taken down like a shot. Southern Spain would be a better option, or perhaps the non-EU Southern European or North African countries.
