Newbie - Need Recommendation on a Linux Sat Box

Hi,

So far I have been using a Technomate 5200 Sat box for FTA/Freesat channels. A friend of a friend for a new TM-500 box which has all s?y channels on it. After doing some research I found that a lot of people like Drambox receivers. I currently have a small standard/oval dish which provides me channels from 28.x sat.

My questions are:

- Which one would you recommend Technomate or Dreambox? Also, which model?
- Do I need to change my dish to a bigger one or can I continue to use the one I have.
- Do I need a s?y or another card to get all of the channels working on the selected box?

Thanks a bunch for your help.
 
One more thing: The guy who just got TM-500 was told that he needs to have the box connected to Internet all the time. What is that needed for? Thankx.
 
Welcome to the forum

The Linux boxes are all similar in operation, there is more hobby support for the DB's but the newer boxes are catching up fast these days

As for the second question - Its whats called a card share system. The card keys are shared between various locations.

HOWEVER

1) if you pay for a commercial service its what we call a payserver, and any discussion whatsoever of these scum of the earth operators is strictly and absolutely forbidden here, so you wont get any help if it goes pear shaped.

2) Sky are shortly to introduce new anti piracy measures specifically to reduce the amount of card sharing that goes on, so dont be surprised if any system you buy stops working soon

I am really not interested in any third-party pay service. I like tinkering with stuff so this is why I am looking for either a TM or a DM. Is there any particular/recent model you would recommend to start with? HD is very nice but I think HD boxes are still expensive so I may start with non-HD box.

One last one, would you mind elaborating a bit more regarding what sky is coming up with? Some new type of encryption?
