Newbie needs help!

Hi all:

I'm a complete novice with satellite systems, as I'm a Virgin Media cable subscriber, but have decided to treat ourselves with a Freesat HD TV for Xmas. At my caravan in the Yorkshire Dales we have a very old Sky Freesat setup, but the card is expiring, and rather than buying a new one, I decided to get one of the Labgear Free to air Satellite kit from Screwfix. I thought I would test this at home using my son's old Sky dish, which works fine with a Sky box. I set it to Astra 2B and did an automatic search and got 300+ TV channels & 100+ radio channels....Brilliant I thought....HOWEVER....when I check them I don't have any BBC channels (apart from just about every BBC1 area going), Channel 4 (although I do have loads of Channel 4+1s) or Five.

What am I doing wrong?
 
Sounds like you have some frequencies missing. Have a look here and manually scan whetevers missing:

Check that your LNB skew is correct .............. The missing Channels are chiefly Horizontally Polarised (BBC2, 3, 4etc), plus Channel 4 is Horizontal but the related +1's are Vertical.

Also, you won't get the labels for BBC3 and BBC 4 until a scan after 19.00 as they double up with the CBeebies/CBBC Channels.

Stand in front of Dish, slacken LNB collar and rotate slightly clockwise. Tighten up. Scan again. Fiddle until happy :)

As it happens, it was still raining, so I thought I would try a different approach! I scrapped the setup using "Reset to Factory defaults" then re-scanned Astra-2B and, lo & behold, the missing channels appeared!

I was telling one of my friends about this, and he asked if I would sort his Sky set up out, as he was getting the dreaded "No satellite signal being received" - so we checked, and his dish had fallen off!
