newbie setup weird problem

Understand that you are moving the whole dish, but why not just use the motor? If you are getting a 'booming' Hotbird signal, ask the receiver to move to Thor and scan for channels. USALS should automatically take your dish to the correct position for Thor. Having asked the receiver to go to Thor it should just be there, an abscence of signal would indicate you aren't tracking the arc properly. Once the dish elevation is peaked up for one sat the motor takes care of elevation and skew adjustments
 
agreed, I set the dish straight to hotbird with the motor on zero, now according to gaaps the azimith angle for my location would be 15 deg on hotbird, so ive moved the motor to 15 deg and now swing the dish back to hotbird and tune it in, thats done now but now ive lost hotbird again, so in theory i tell the motor to go to thor it should, but it does not go. never messed with something so awkward in my life with years of cnc building and fabrication this stiff is off the scale. i think the receiver has probs but cant check it.

You should set motor to zero, then go to Hotbird via the motor, then peak up the dish/motor. If you're satisfied with the signal from Hotbird tell the receiver to go to Thor. I think you're reading too much theory and confusing yourself slightly. It's also possible that the receiver is having problems moving the motor.
 
Step by Step check

1. Use receiver to send the motor to 0 (or reference)
2. Make sure that at 0 the dish, motor stub and pole are all perfectly lined up straight together (there is a marking line on the motor stub usually)
3. Start with dish tilted marginally higher than vertical
4. Check that coordinates have been entered correctly into the receiver using the decimal format (rather than the degrees & minutes format)
5. Check that USALS or Go to X function is selected
6. Select Thor and the 11325 transponder (a lazier and easier alternative often is to select AB3 5w using eg the 11591 or 12543 transponder)
7. Then manually adjust dish/motor, rotating entire assembly sideways in micro movements until signal appears on the chosen transponder
8. Scan and check pictures correspond to selected satellite
9. Fine tune for best possible signal
10. Use receiver to send motor to other satellites and fine tune as necessary

EDIT One more check: check that the latitude or elevation on the motor is set correctly either to correct latitude on the latitude scale or 90 minus latitude on the elevation scale e.g. 51 on Latitude or 39 on elevation scales respectively.
 
ok, there goto be a problem here somewhere, doing everything yous tell me but still no Thor, Bigtee i was doing it backward to try and get from hotbird to Thor. now ive got hotbird 13 east and eurobird 9.0 east, with the dish in one position, got to be a receiver problem, its not moving the dish when it should, darkness is coming got about 1.5hrs left. wow not a day to give up smoking!!
 
I think you'll find that Hotbird and Eurobird use some of the same transponders, which is why you appear to have another sat when in fact the motor hasn't moved. I agree, it does sound like your receiver doesn't provide enough voltage to move the motor. Is there any chance of borrowing another receiver from a friend to check the dish and motor are ok? Have you tried moving the motor manually using the East/West buttons (assuming the motor has this facility)?
 
Yes, goin to take the receiver down a friends later, see how it works on his system, then maybe bring his receiver here to see if that works. yes the motor moves with the manual button. getting close, may skive another day off friday to get it going, made some progress today so not so bad. If you're getting some satellites and not others it sounds as though the motor movement isn't following the arc of the satellites, is the longditude set correctly on the motor bracket?
 
Ye ha!! got it what was i doing wrong, had the swr meter set to high so kept missing it, signal is only half as strong as hotbird or astra, once my friend tuning the receiver i just put it on Thor bbc new and tweaked the dish, i found that the quality signal does not show anything when in antenna settings, even now its bang on it still shows no signal or quality in that menu, however when i change channels the osd shows a proper reading. what a week, i think a digital sat finder would make these installs real easy. Its good to have tv again, is there anything else i should get me head into now in regard to sat tv, now its working, lots of channels to flick through, infact way to many, is there a short list of movie channels and music anywhere.
