Originator of the 'Quatermass' series Nigel Kneale has passed away aged 84.

Watching the 'Quatermass Experiment' on our B/W TV as a youngster in the '50's was a spine-chilling experience. There simply hadn't been anything like it before, and I really did look under the bed that night 'O'

Ironically, he never considered himself as a sci-fi writer, but will always be remembered for those series.

RIP

Yes a great story idea and as you say, was very atmospheric.

A nice legacy and not a bad age at 84.

Sir John Mills tried to revive Quatermass in about 1980. It flopped. Nothing wrong with Mills but you can't re-invent a classic. Sad about the man's death...

And.....

Yesterday, I managed to find an unedited version of the 1960's film, in among a charity shop, where somebody must have dropped off a whole collection of sci-fi DVDs, VCR tapes (stop sniggering), and vinyl (honestly, you can stop sniggering).

I'll post images of some others later.

Maybe not science fiction

"From many observations of males and females together, I noticed that it was always the male walking to the female when she produced these vibrational signals."

Further study revealed that the male calls also triggered activity in a nerve cell known to be responsible for triggering escape behaviour in crickets.

This, along with careful tracking of the cricket evolutionary tree, led Prof ter Hofstede and her colleagues to conclude that what is now a mating song and dance routine originated from a reflex startled "jump".
