Yes, used to queue to see his latest film as a youngster. Never went down well with snooty critics, but there was a serious actor inside him too - he played a dying cancer patient in a play to some acclaim later in his career.

I wasn't a great fan of his pathos although it was of its day. I warmed to him as a person though and especially enjoyed the programme on him a few years ago.

Watched all of his films in my young days and quite a few as oldies in later years, RIP Norman, you had a good innings and cheered up a lot of people with your humour.

Great comic actor, it was sad to hear the announcement on the 10 o'clock news last night, but at 95, he had a long and good life making people laugh...
