just found this old coin :-) it has seen action in ww2, and came back! Uncle had it with him ever since. As his lucky charm.

Despite living in the years (50's) when the farthing was legal tender, I can't recall anything priced down to farthings in that period. Unhappily, I don't readily know anyone immediately of a more advanced age who might remember.
 
I do, but I can't quite recall whom.
 
I thought I would share the photos. I was going through some old things. its an 1939 Farthing, it's something I have never seen, but that's due to my age.

Still haven't plucked up the courage to go through other bits I have.

As some of my family became famous, due to the way the died. I have some of there personal effects, as they were given to me, some years ago, just sealed up in a bag in the loft.

I suppose I should be brave, and go and have a look!

I know it can be hard to deal with, but without are history we are nothing. I come from an Anglo-Irish background and have had lots of problems over the years with the confrontations in Eire and UK. My father ( English ) married an Irish girl and caused various problems with both sides of the family. We all know the " problems " that occurred later, but only by openly discussing such things can be resolved. With regards to WW2 , my father was on a boat that was sunk off Malta, he was stung by a Portuguese Man of War, but survived.

History is what makes us, and makes us stronger!

I have Irish decent also on my mums side, but when she had lung cancer, they had to run some genetic testing, and it seems I also have black roots, as mums lung cancer was a form normal in Afro-Caribeanian people.

But the bits I still haven't gone through is from my god parents, and it still gets to me.

And like I said it's the way in which they passed away, that stops me from going through it all.

All I will say is when they became famous, it made all the tabloid news papers & tv channels world wide, and to make it worse.

This is very topical in this house! SWMBO's dad was Irish, but her mum decried everything Irish - don't ask! Anyway, We're going to her aunt's funeral in Dublin tomorrow and will meet some relatives that she hsn't seen in over 30 years and many that she hasn't previously met.

What part of Dublin?, either way, a cousin of mine will be within ear reach! Catholic upbringing , 22 children at least!

I remember spending farthings in the little shop next door to our house when I was three or four, could still get a blackjack or orange and lemons chew, half Irish here as well, other half is German, so an odd mix.:)

Yes, comes back to me now, buying Trebor spearmint chews at four a penny from the sweet shop on the way to school.
Visits to the dentist to fill teeth with mercury followed not too long after eating too many of those sweets.
