opening ports on netopia / Dream 500

Hi All,
My first post.
Having problem opening a port on the netopia 2247 eircom router. I have a dream box 500 connected to it with no problems until I un-tick the DHCP option in the dream menu which is required when connecting to Dyndns.com. Ran port checker and it sees the port opened no problem. When set for Dyndns port checker cannot see the open port.
I am a novice at computers. Came from the old school of bench fault finding .

i just set the routers firewall to off or low which allows everything through.

Yes I always turn off the firewall. However still have the same problem. Have checked with the same type router in the w/ shop and set it up no problem. I just went into define custom services, entered port number and then enabled the service. Could it be that the other router is a different sw version or have I something else to un-tick.
