Pakistan’s TV restrictions easing
The emergency in Pakistan has badly affected “foreign” satellite signals. But some of the channel’s hardest hit can now be viewed – although generally only on cable.
A BBC Monitoring report Dec 11 states that the country’s major domestic news channels are again transmitting. “Karachi Aaj TV and ARY One World in Urdu, Karachi Dawn News in English, CNBC Pakistan, Business Plus, Indus News, TV One, Royal, Din News, Dhoom, and Punjabi news and entertainment station APNA Channel - remain available through cable transmission,” says the BBC report. “However, after resuming transmission, major news channels have not been observed to carry live coverage with detailed footage of important political events,” the report continues.
“Foreign news channels available via cable include CNN, BBC World, Sky News, Fox News, and Al-Jazeera in English,” says the report. However, “Karachi Geo News TV in Urdu – a 24-hour satellite news TV channel owned by Pakistan's Jang publishing group, and broadcasting from Dubai - remains off air via cable. However, the channel is available through satellite transmission in Pakistan and ‘around the globe’. Through advertisements in its sister publication, influential English daily The News, Geo News TV informs its viewers that they can receive Geo on their satellite dishes, that they can listen to Geo on telephone by dialling the number 0900-99920; and that they can receive Geo on their cell phones by typing ‘NEWS’ and sending it to the number 4360,” adds the BBC.
