Advice Needed PCI set up

My Satellite Setup
VU+Duo, Vu+Duo2, Vu+Zero, Gibi 1.5m, TBS 6903 PCI
My Location
North West UK
I currently run a gibi 1.5m with a sperjack and vbox with vu receiver. However I would like to get into feed hunting so need a set up for blind scan.

Can anyone recommend a quality PCI card? And more importantly, how do I actually move the dish? Do I still need to incorporate the vbox into the set up?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also have gibertini 1.5 dish and tbs 6983 sat card, I also have an Alsat 1.2 disecq positoner.

I use crazyscan and easy blind scan to scan for new stuff.

In easy blind scan I can get it to send raw diseqc to move my dish and change the switches so I can choose my dish/lnb combination.

So am i right in thinking everything is set up as it is now, except the sat receiver is replaced with the PC? So the feed from the dish goes to vbox and then into sat card in pc?
I just need to be clear as will need to do some drilling as I'm relocating it all upstairs.

In my case the dish cable goes to the positioner, then to my Dr hd D15 loop out to sat card.

Both the dr and the sat card can then move the dish.

But yes you could run the cable straight to the positioner and sat card.

I am about to pull the pin and purchase a TBS 6903. My aim along with feed hunting will be watching my Fransat sub in my mancave (I only have the card, no receiver). So I was doing a bit of research and it appears vplug will do the trick. Does anyone know what dvb viewer programme would be best to use? There are so many I'm not sure which way to turn.

The TBS 6903 and a lot of other cards are PCIe (PCI express) cards. If you are using a very old PC it might be safe to check if you have PCIe slots available. If your PC was built within the last 5 or 6 years then its almost guaranteed to have PCIe slots in it, just make sure you have a spare slot.

There are several options for a software program to use for viewing, the ones that come to mind are DVB Dream, DVB Viewer and ProgDVB.
Of those three, my personal favourite is DVD Dream as I find it the easiest to use.

For scanning for feeds, the two best options in my opinion are EBS Pro and CrazyScan. I am not sure about the status of EBS Pro at the moment re getting a subscription to it. The developer closed down development a while back but it looks like it might be resuming.

Update:

I forgot to add SmartDVB to the list of programs for viewing, its is popular and although I have rarely used it, the interface looks to be user friendly.

Thanks for that, yes my PC is quite recent and has available slots. Would you also recommend a decent graphics card too? I don't game so have been just using Intel's i7 integrated GPU.

It probably depends on what you intend to view.

If you wish to view HD encrypted content it can sometimes be intensive on a PC processor. The integrated graphics from an i7 CPU it might possibly stutter a little but to be honest I dont know. Any cheap second hand graphics card less than a few years old will be superior to the i7 CPU integrated graphics. You could check out the picture quality with your integrated graphis and if it is not that good then take a decision about buying a dedicated graphics card.

If you do go for a separate graphics card you do not need one of those mega powered gaming jobs costing hundreds, a cheapy second hand one a few years old will do nicely.

I'm using integrated ATI Radeon 3000 graphics on my 8 core AMD 4.20GHz, never had any problems with HD, even encrypted stuff chugs along in DVB Dream around 11%. The only time I see CPU up around 80% is on some of the 4K demo's.

You have quite a bit of processing power there, 8 cores at 4.2GHz (33.6GHz). The OP has 4 cores possibly at 3.4GHz (13.6Ghz) if it is a Sandybridge CPU, possibly a little more juice from anonther later variant of an i7 CPU. I think the OP will probably be OK with integrated graphics, its a case of see what its like and take a view.

Some of the MPEG4 HD encrypted feeds can be a bit demanding on processor power but I have never had any problems with an old i5 2500k quad core Sandybridge CPU and a cheapy old graphics card.

My chip is a 4700K. But I will invest in a modest card anyway as I don't currently have a 4k TV but I might as well get everything I need as I may also view 1080 biss encrypted channels also.

Just a quick point of information, if you find that some of the encrypted pictures are not viewable then it could possibly be a codec issue. With more recent versions of DVB Dream it gives the option to install LAV codecs, personally, I would accept this option. If you get any picture viewing issues go into the menus and select the LAV codec option everythere you can for video and audio.

For the other software viewing packages I am not sure if you need to install LAV codecs separately or if they are part of the installer package?

Thanks, I have everything installed and set up, im just waiting for my LNB to arrive as I only had a single one fitted to my dish. I have installed DVB dream and crazyscan, so just working my way around them both, quite a bewildering aray of settings to configure :eek:

After you have used the programs a while they become a lot easier to use, its just a learning curve at first. If you plan on doing a lot of blind scanning then CrazyScan is very good, the other good option is EBS Pro. Out of interest, what LNB did you go for, you have a nice dish listed on your avatar/profile it deserves a good LNB?

I have gone for an Inverto black ultra quad. I have a single fitted at the moment and have had great results compaired to others I have tried. I originally got the set up for beIN sports when the full package was on 7W

Just to emphasise the point about codecs, There was a biss encrypted feed on 3.0W today that I could not get to clear in dvb dream even though I had the correct CW for it. After analysing the video stream I saw that it was in 422 video chroma format.

On checking the installation of dvb dream I realised that it was an older version on a PC where I had not updated dvb dream to use LAV codecs. As soon as I updated the codecs to LAV, the biss encrypted feed in 422 cleared and gave a picture.
