Why do so many people wrongly describe "perforated" dishes as "mesh". The structure is nothing like a mesh.

Not sure, always knew them as mesh dishes back in the 90s. Apart from Sky mini dishes you don't see so many these days.

Mesh is crossed over wire or fibre, perforated is solid material with holes punched in or cast with holes in.

Solid fibreglass/smc dishes are also mesh - strictly speaking of course.

...wheteas ABS plastic dishes (SMWs) are in fact solids , as they have a reflective coating rather than embedded mesh. Maybe they are better for Ka than SMC dishes?
(There must be a reason why there are specific Ka band SMCs from prodelin and skyware that cost a lot more than the Ku equivalents...)

Depending on the frequency, drilled metal surface is continuous and reflects the signal to 100% (for example). Being the highest frequency (band KA), the holes must be smaller or the signal is not reflected, crossing the plate portion of the signal and the reflected signal down on the LNB.

In Spain they had had the time these antennas (75-85 years if I remember correctly), most also "mesh" (actually perforated disk), do the stamping perforated makes them more expensive and now can not find them easily, they are all solid they are cheaper.

And ear is perforated

:D
If you heard, my son think is right (for references not see), repair the perforation are 10 minutes to a specialist (according to comments), do not forget bathing wear earplugs to keep out water makes bathing caps and as headphones, from moment to practice in a company before finishing school.

Just for the record, that was for the first TV system we had in for English TV. Re-beam system by a firm called Telemicro Levante. They got taken out by the Guardia Civil for tax irregularities!
