Hi Peeps.
I am looking to buy a motorized system. I have seen Fortec 5100 @ sat*logue (f*lly p*tched). Would this be a good receiver? To update k*ys would i use remote, or download files? . The more i read more  i get. :-newb

Grateful for any advice.:)

Yorks.

Good choice. Update with new patches via a PC - receiver downloading program (_www.fortecstar.com), or enter your own keys via code menu.

Disecq control of your motorised dish, CI slots for cams if you decide on this route.

Patches and codes available from many sites.

Thanks Llew,
I will have a look at the downloading program. I take it that is for updating firmware and nothing to do with k*ys. No doubt I will be back for more advice. Thanks.

Have had a look at downloading program instructions. Can you tell me what the Fl*sh Rom file does. Am i in effect able to p*tch the machine myself? Or do i need to buy a fully p*tched machine and just update it myself? Sorry to be a pain but cautious is my middle name.
Thanks,

Doesnt matter - you just connect up, fire up the loader programme find your receiver patch which you have downloaded, and wait 2 minutes. :)

Use the downloading program as shown here -

h**p://www.geocities.com/nhfs49/Fortecstar.gif

Obtain the latest patch for your particular receiver from e.g -

h**p://www.al7bar-soft1.com/

Follow the instructions in the gif, that's it :)

Thanks for your help guys! I'm progressing from the sitting up on my own stage - crawling next!

I have been reading peeps comments about second generation encryption. Will i only be viewing FTA in the near future or am i just a born optimist? lol

Who knows - thats half the fun of the hobby. The new encryptions will fall eventually, but if they will be available to the current generation of receivers is anyones guess.

Look at whats happened in the lats few months - Seca2 fell open. Videoguard is half open - (at least you can use your Sky cards on some non Sky boxes now).

12 months ago, you would have been laughed at for suggesting you could watch Sky One on a non Sky box withinin a year.

Well you are in the right place to learn! :D

I'm certainly up for it. Just hope all the encrypted channels don't disappear b4 i get a systemO-Ha .

So just to recap on the Fortec Star (and other receivers for that matter), by flashing the unit and uploading p*tch s/w i can increase the viewing capabilities so to speak. A bit like unlocking a DVD player and changing to region 0?

Am i getting close?

Yep.

The hardest part is mentally accepting the chucking of some unknown software at your luverly new box.

After that, simple (but regular) updates to keep everything ticking over.

Just prepare well, follow established and tested SW links, and you'll be fine.

At the end of the day, although extremely unlikely, you just have to accept that the worst thing that can happen is that your box has to go away to be reflashed by Mr. Star

Llew's your man.

Had to spend some dosh :-cry1

At least now I will be able to discuss proper issues, instead of figments of my imagination. O-zzz
