Please recommend a receiver with HD capability!!!

Hi there,

I need a receiver and I already have an installed dish. The receiver should have the following features:

- shouldn't be too expensive and fancy (<300€)
- possibly WITHOUT a fan (I hate its noise)
- be able to open encrypted channels at hotbirds (as for now I have no idea how that works)
- should support HD channels
- should have HDMI
- should be able to receive hotbird and astra sattelites in germany (all of them do, I guess)

does anything like this exist in nature???

Yesterday I bought a VU+ Duo Twin for >400€ at amazon but now I'm thinking to return it take something cheaper and simpler, but which will fulfill the above mentioned requirements.

PLEASE HELP!!!
 
The Vu+ Duo is a highly regarded receiver, probably one of the best out there atm.

Theres not much open without subscriptions these days, no access to subscription = no pay channels opening :D
 
As above, but if you want something cheaper look at the VU+ Solo.
 
If I were you I would think twice before sending back the VU+Duo..Its a highly rated receiver....one of the best you could say...Perhaps now you would see it as a complicated piece of equipment but in the future as you would get used to it you would kiss yourself for keeping it. Besides you could always get somebody to hook it up for you.....until you get the hang of it and then see how you fare as time goes by.

This is what I read in the reviews all over the Internet! But really, what can you do with it? How is it better than other boxes? Sorry, I'm really dumb in this subject, never used sat tv before.

What a crap! I will be missing old good times then when everything was hackable :( Why then folks exchange some codes in forums, what for? What's the cardsharing? I hear about it sometimes in german sat forums.

Thanks guys, I'm just trying to get a general picture/map of the sat world in my mind.

I checked the VU+ Solo on the Internet and it actually looks pretty slick! NO ********** FAN on the backside!!! This is really great :)) The bad thing is that I cannot use an internal hard drive to record tv :( Only USB PVR. At most usefull for a USB stick. I cannot really use external USB drives with the receiver because my toddler children will take this construction apart :)

Regarding PVR, I thougth to use an internal 60GB 2.5" SSD (expensive shit!!!) SATA drive. BTW, does VU+ Duo also support 2.5" drives or only 3.5" ones?

We have never allowed codes to be published on this forum. Even if we did allow this there would be no point as all the systems that are worth watching are secure at the moment.

Cardsharing is the use of one card across several receivers. We don't prohibit discussion of this as long as it is your own card that you are sharing acros your own receivers. What we DO prohibit abolutely is discussion of commercial cardsharing where you pay a fee to someone for the codes to be sent across the Internet. If you decide to follow the commercial CS route be careful, discussing it here could result in an instant ban. You also run the risk of losing a lot of money if the CS provider suddenly closes down.

This is actually what happens to me frequently with some advanced technical stuff, which I don't understand at the start. The first natural feeling is to reject it. This is why I still didn't return the thing back and went for help to the forum. I think I still don't understand what I hold in my hands and what I can do with that. But the fan noise is so annoying. Why there should be a fan really, the CPU is just a little bit faster (+66MHz?) than in the VU+ Solo and Solo doen't have a fan :(

But I don't mean that the codes are shared here. I don't want to do anything illigal or even discuss it. I just want to understand where the (new to me) world of the sat stands now and what's possible or not possible. I'm a newbie. I didn't even decided what receiver to use! :)
 
Hacks, keys & codes died out 2-3 years ago - the modern encryptions are much more secure. A few minor packages come and go but all the big stuff is screwed down tight now..

Card sharing (also known as internet key sharing) is a viable method, but even that is under attack now - for example OSN (Orbit / Showtime) will be turning their sharable encryption off next week due to terrible piracy problems in the Middle East.

Of course it still means you need access to a card share - and before anyone reading this says something they shouldnt - asking for shares is a quick way of getting your account here cancelled :D
 
Just to add- I own VU+ solo and duo - both are great.

I think its important that you are aware of the distintion between Linux operated boxes and standard boxes. With Linux boxes you are expected to have some computer knowledge ..and they are not exactly plug in and play

Why not buy one of last years models (TM 6800 for example) , pretty cheap for what they can still do, and superglue the USB cable into the front, and the external drive out of the way ?

Or nail one of their feet a safe distance somewhere away from the television ?
 
Don't consider getting rid of that Vu+ Duo, it is one of the best receivers there is. Linux, C/S and customising apart, it has one of the best tuners ever. The other thing is it is configurable in ways that are impossible with a standard receiver, for example DiSEqC command order and repeats.

You could use a 2.5" disc but it it is set up to accept a 3.5". There are a couple of guides on the net showing 2.5" discs installed in this receiver so if you search around you will find something. 60GB is far too small though. I bought a 500GB for mine, (cost 30€,) but I'd recommend bigger, possibly 1.5TB if you are considering HD recordings.

Other nice things about the Duo are, 1) it is a cool receiver, literally. Where most receivers get hot enough to fry an egg this thing remains almost cold. There is a fan but you'd be hard pushed to hear it and if you like there is a pluggin that will switch the fan on only when required. 2) you can stream with this receiver, so you can watch a different channel on a PC or laptop in another room over your home network or WiFi connection without the need for any addtional cabling or other hardware, or even a television set. 3) you can record subscription programs without paying an extra premium on top of your subscription. 4) you can watch/record more than one subscription channel without paying extra. 5) you can share your subscription cards with other receivers in your home allowing you to watch different channels (that you are already paying for) in other rooms without paying any extra.

I can't believe some of the prices I've seen people selling these for. I bought this one for "testing" purposes, paid 290€ plus VAT, and got an extra 3% discount for doing a bank transfer.
 
That is a decent price.

Still can't afford it!

Look dear, here's the new satellite receiver I bought to replace the one that got damage by the lightning strike... Oh that's handy, the kids will be able to get back to watching Cartoonito now.
